Looks like you can get it at .. (ack, cough) PETCO! .. Gonna start a thread and see if anyone else uses this stuff and what it costs..

I just had the same thing happen to me I did my water change late Thursday useing IO

You don't say in that thread that you tested the Instant Ocean and found extremely high alkalinity. The problems people are talking about in this thread were caused by extremely high alkalinity.

Why don't you check the alkalinity in a freshly prepared batch of saltwater to see if that is the problem. Maybe your problem was caused by something other than the salt mix.

:)

New water is testing fine, I never thought to test the tank for Alk.. on Sat.
I'm just saying that we have had very simlier problems and I didn't do anything else to my tank, but the water change using IO, that also was bough from Petmarts during the free shipping deal.

Fisheye and Nysbadmk8, if you're saying IO did this to you because it was a bad batch perhaps you should share your reasons for thinking so. Fisheye, isn't it true you don't even know the dKH reading? Nysbadmk8, was it IO you used? How long ago? What died if anything? What became of it?

Catalina Water Companyââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s Real Ocean is available nationwide through PetCo according to an e-mail response I received a little white ago from them.

I called the nearest PetCo in Baton Rouge (45 miles away) and had to go through three different employees before I found one capable of looking it up on their store's computer system. He told me they have all of 10 gallons in stock. He said it comes in 5-gallon disposable plastic-lined cardboard boxes and two of the original four boxes leaked and had to be disposed of. He said they plan on stocking 20 gallons (four 5-gal containers) but won't re-order it if it doesn't sell. He had no idea what it actually was until I explained it to him. I think he thought it was some sort of additive that you dosed in small amounts. And he was the manager of the fish department.

At the Baton Rouge PetCo it sells for $9.99 + tax for a 5-gal container. With tax, that's about $218 for 100 gallons, not counting the cost of gas for the 90-mile roundtrip. And I would have to ask them to special order it because they have no intentions of stocking more than 20 gallons at a time.

nothing died, i used IO, and im changeing out about 40 gallons of water to correct dkh

Do you still have a sample of the suspect salt? If you do, I highly recommend mailing a sample to Bob at AS. Even though nothing died, you deserve a new bucket and an answer from them.

no i dont, i wish i did... im still combateing my high dkh after a 60 gallon water change, Im Mad

Did you use it all or throw it away? Oh no. I would phone Bob anyway and add your voice to the chorus. They want samples before they will talk compensation... although you don't have anything to compensate except for a new bucket. You would think sending them a sample of your water would be fine as long as the dKH is high enough to prove it. Phone and ask. Tell us how it turns out.

i used it all, i was setuping up my tank, im not going to kill myself to get a free bucket, but i do think im going to switch to Kent salt

I agree... this isn't about getting a free bucket of salt. It's not a free bucket though. You've already paid for one bucket and you deserve the usage of that bucket. Now you have to pay for two buckets for the usage of only one. That's just a mute point... actually kind of petty really when you think of what's really at stake in the reefing community. I had a traumatic experience and the immediate replacement of my salt was little comfort.

I think it is important to complain to AS so they have a better idea what's going on so that they can better correct this problem. And thanks for posting your experience for us. Good luck with the new tank!

My next bucket of salt will be Kent too. I've heard little bad about this brand. Tropic Marin doesn't have much bad on it either... then again, it's not used by as nearly many people so complaints would reflect that. People also tend to assume German-made products are superior to American, which isn't always the case.

IMO Tropic Marin is very good salt. I don't see the logic in changing to Kent salt if you are ticked off with AS seeing as they also make Kent salt.

Just to add my 2 cents here.

I have a bad batch of IO as well. Not as bad as yours but.

Here are my parameters after mixing and letting it sit for 24-48 hours.

Sal - 1.025
Alk - 12DKH
Cal - 260
Mag - 800

Very low calcium.

If you have any information regarding Kent or any other AS-made brand having the same bad batch problem as IO then please share. Unless I learn otherwise I say it's logical to consider other brands over IO for now at least.

I don't have any info ...it just seemed that if someone is ticked at the people that make IO they should logically be ticked at the people who make Kent
