Bad experience at Marks Tropical fish

I just got back from Marks Tropical fish off of Laurel Cnyn and Ventura in Sherman Oaks and had the worst experiece. Made me so angry. I went in looking for a true perc. I asked one of the employees (talll white male with long blond hair) if they had any in stock. He foun one but it had no price. He looked at a mated pair in the next holding tank and they pair was 89.99, he tought about it for a second and said "well if two are 89.99 then this one will be 45.99". My jaw just droped, talk about feeling ripped off! Im still furiouse!!! I talked to bob, the manager and they decided to talk to eachother to see how much they can get for it. They did not now my brother was with me, but he was standing next to them while they were thinking of a price to rip me off with. They figured they can give me a discount and sell it for $40. I got mad and told them I was in on Wedesnday and it was 24.99 and they felt stupid. I just walked out. Ive spent almost $500 in there in the past year, and they want to rip me off like that! JERKS!!!

Marks is OFF my list!!!!!!!!!!!!!:mad2:

I'd say go back when Mark is in and tell him about your experience. From my limited dealings with him, Mark seems like a stand up guy and should rectify the situation.

Ive dealt with mark and he nows what he is doing. I would expect this from an employee but Bob is the second man incharge there and he was talking with his wroker to see how much money they can make off me. Im not an idiot, there is no way I am going to pay $45 for a ture perc + tax. $50 for a clownfish? No way. I will not do business there again. When I do maintenacne work in that area I usually recomend people to buy from him, but after this Ill tell them to drive a little more and go to Aquarium Center.

I have had good experiances there. Just like any other store they are there to make money. Take it up wth mark. But just like anywhere else you just need to know better most of the time. If you stuck around they would have probably given the corect price.

I was there for a good 15 minutes. I told him that his price was wrong. I asked how can the price increase by $20 in 3 days? They had no answer, they then went off to a corner again to talk and said they can give it to me for $40. I said "No thank you, thanks for you time guys, bye" I walked out. I think 15 minutes is sufficent time. I mean, if your going to try to rip people off, dont do it with a fish thats availible EVERYWHERE, thats just plain stupidity to me.

LMAO:lol:

Isn't a mated pair worth more than the individual ones separately? Maybe they didn't want to split the pair. If that was the case, they should have explained that to you.

Im sorry to hear about that, I have had a few bad things like that happen. I would take it up with mark, it may have been an onyx clownfish, or someother type, but if you are sure that it was a true perc, then I would definetly take it up with mark.

Yeah it was a true perc, wild caught though. It was not a mated pair, just next to a holding tank that had a mated pair in it, thats how they figured the price I guess. Anyway, I drove to the little LFS down the street from me on Balboa and White Oak in granada hills and bought a true perc for 19.99, and its been in his tank for 3 weeks without copper, doing GREAT. To bad for mark. Anyone now how I can contact him directly since he is not always in the store?

You know, I have had the same feelings in that store. Not sure if I look like the reefer type or not :) but When i walk in there I can get no employee to help me. I used to do the rounds - Aqua center- underwater depot- marks- when i was starting out and found marks really not interested in working with me (when I didnt know what i was doing). I Marked that store off my list... :)

EXACTLY Jason. I guess having a mustache is a negative thing in this hobby becuase whenever I walk into that store I get no attention. However when Im coming out of work, wearing a shirt and tie, I get the kindness and everyone want to sell me something. Kind of a crappy feeling.

This sounds like a clear case of being ripped off! People should heed this post and be carefull when dealing with them. If they had the Balls to over inflate the price like this on a very common fish, imagine what happens on Rare fishes or Corals.

I agree. Their prices are a little higher than most but I like to got there becuase I now what Im getting and I trusted them. I wont make that mistake again man. I was wearing the baggy pants and white T-shirt and had a mustache, I guess they assumed I am a moron. "Dont judge a book by it cover" right guys? We should all now this, we are not kids.

Ethics are Ethics, I have found that if a Salesman will shaft a nieve person on a simple transaction then they will shaft you on a more complicated transaction. This guy will just wait until you come in one day and look at something and say "What is this?" then he knows your in the dark and will treat you just like the guy who doesnt know a Clown Fish from a guppy.
