I got some live rock from a friend who took down his tank about 9 months ago. He had the live rock in a plastic tote in saltwater with a air pump to circulate water. no light. He only change the saltwater once in 9 months.
He gave me the rock about 4 weeks ago and i put it in my new aqua pod 24, with one piece of cured rock.
some of the old rock has black, pink, purple, green, blue colors on it.
the tank still has nitrite and ammonia levels.
Is this rock bad?
should i have not put it in my tank?
or will it be fine?

You're probably going to have a cycle but the rock should be fine. You may want to use carbon and do water changes until parameters are stable.

Never heard of bad LR, unless you bleach lol. Cycle just like said above.

I have. A shoddy LFS tried to sell me uncured liverock once. I think that's the only thing I could qualify as truly "bad" liverock.

When I first started I purchased a bad piece of live rock, it was hatian rock and gave me SO many problems. I threw it out completely, as my params would not go to 0 no matter how many water changes I did. That piece was in my tank for 6+ weeks, and was still causing problems. I took it out, and everything was fine.

Weird. Maybe a clam, oyster or scallop somewhere in the middle that had died?

Probably...but I wasn't going to wait until whatever died was completely out of the system...plus it wasn't that great looking. :)

There is no bad live rock. Only bad live rock owners. I saw a post on craigslist once where the seller (honestly, to his credit)
acknowledged that he had use copper to treat the FOWLR tank and the rock had residual copper.

I bought Haiti live rock. Now I am scared. :(

you better check it for innertubes:eek1:

I read a thread here on RC about someone who had problems with his tank and finally discovered a brass bolt embedded in a piece of his live rock. I would consider that bad rock!

I am still looking at my rock for some pirate booty! No luck yet though.
