Where's The Reef?
Just saw where there is going to be bad storms tomorrow (Sunday), take some precautions in case the power goes out!Generator, Battery Power, what ever you have.

Just a heads up, Keep your reefs safe.

I need to siphon out the old gas and get my generator in good running condition again. I think I have 2 year old gas in it....ooops. ha. It did save my tank a few years ago when power was knocked out a few days and it was 110* outside.....

They Sure Come in handy, it is one peice of Equiptment Im glad I invested in, but I hope I never have to use.

Always use "Sta-Bil" in any occasionally used gas powered equipment to stabilize the fuel aromatics and keep it from going stale, absorbing moisture and fouling spark plugs.

Also, always start and run your generator for at least 10-minutes once a month to ensure water is removed from oil deposits, which reduces sludge, and prevents condensation forming on dry cylinder walls, which will lead to pitting, low compression and blow-by.

After living in South Florida for 18 years, where a generator is even more needed, I finally had my house wired for my generator here in Memphis. Now I just plug it in and start it (no more extension cords!). The day after I had it installed the power went out from a storm....what are the odds? I have used it twice since as we lose electric pretty easy for some reason. I think it is a great investment. You can get them in near mint condition for a song and a dance on craigslist. Many people get them and then get tired of seeing them in their garage and just want to get rid of them. I think it is one of the most valuable pieces of equipment you can have.....even if you never use it and it is just a good piece of mind.

It went out somewhere around 11 and I think it was off for 3-4 hours. The last few times I immediately jumped up and got the process going. I read about how quickly things can go south in the tank. However, since the weather has been so mild, I figured the house temp would not drop too fast. If it had been still out when I got up, I would have cranked it up and gone to work. I would have come back home around lunch to check on things and filled it back up. I think it can run about 8 hours on a full tank.

Since they ship corals around the world in tiny bags, I figure they can do okay without water flow for day or so, but not sure about the temp. if it gets really cold.

So, it most often will serve as a piece of mind knowing that it is there is it there when needed.....however, for most people the likelihood of losing power for more than a day is probably much lower, but the impact (cost form loses) is still high. I would hedge that bet with a $300-$500 generator if I had a tank full of expensive SPS (especially if it is grown out which can take years).....also nice to keep that refrigerator/stove going.
