badned/multi-banded pipefish

I purchased two banded pipefish last night. They are going into a 110 reef with a mellow selection of fish. I had done a fair amount of reading on these guys before I bought them and thought I had done my homework. However, it had been a while since I looked into them and am now concerned I might have made a mistake. The term banded pipefish seems to be used on here to describe both Doryrhamphus dactyliophorus (the one I have) and Doryrhamphus multiannulatus (the multi-banded pipefish). Many of the pictures referring to people who are keeping “banded pipefish” in reef tanks are of multi-banded pipefish. Is the species I have selected suitable? Which tends to do better?

they both do fine, in a reef set up, as long as you got tons of pods

if you get lucky, like I did, they will eventually or accidentally(I like that better) try frozen and you'll be home free

I also have both among many others, and they hunt all day for pods, and when feeding time comes, they are the first in line

good luck

I hope. Thanks, I am pretty good about researching before I buy, but I made a mistake this time.

seamonkey2, did yours eventually move over to other forms of food? I am concerned about long term nutritional deficiency.

mine eat everything they find thats why I suggested to "hide" food in creavaces, they can find it later and eat

honestly, I dont know, I got a lot of LR, and at night, after lights out, I look around with a flashlight and have observed lots of mysys and pods all over the LR so I am sure they will have food for a long while

Congrats, dvmsn. I'm sure we all feel like we could've done more research at one time or another. Relax, you're off to a great start!

Mine started on cyclopeese after a few weeks and has gradually been eating larger frozen food over the last 9 months. It now tries to eat mysids that are WAY too big for it to swallow. It sucks them part way in and rips off a piece!
