balanophyllia reproduction

Hey everyone,

Ive had a couple of solitary balonophyllia polyps for a while, feed them a few times a week, get great PE ect, just wondering how these reproduce?

in the same time my dendros and tubastrea are 5 times their original size, but havnt seen any signs of reproduction at all from these

Are they from WA or QLD? How long have you had them?

Queensland, 6 months and each polyp has been feed at least a cube of mysid per week

Re: spawning, don't know but from your original post I wasn't sure what you meant by reproduction: ie spawning, brooding or just increased growth like in your tubastrea / dendrophyllia. 6 months isn't long to see whether they'll spawn, or even bud, etc... in your tank. Maybe others have seen spawning, but I haven't.:sad2:

Reason I asked where from is the ones I've got from various QLD collectors have been incorrectly labelled (including exporters). The ones from WA I've bought are sold as solitary polyps and remain that way, even 18 months later. A guy I know has had his WA ones for a couple of years and thinks they're brooders and has a had a number of babies pop up 'downstream' within range of mature polyps. He is waiting to see whether they're actual balanophyllia though, and not other stoney azoox corals he keeps.

By reproduction i meant by any means sexual or bud.

They were meant to be export stock through cairns marine but managed to be kept in the country, it is possible they have been misidentified, as with most items you get through them, but failing them being ballino's the only other thing i could think they could be is dendro's which have a much faster growth rate.

Ill put some photos up for your opinion, but it sounds like the general consenus is that the pollyps are very slow to multiply and to be patient.

Given the above is it probably wise to drop their feeding right down?
