I've brought fish and inverts home with me from the Caribbean in checked luggage. I caught them snorkeling or scuba diving and brought what I needed with me to keep them alive and well in my room for a few days. Before 9/11 I put fish I'd collected in a carry on bag. Since 9/11 I've only brought fish home a couple of times, in checked luggage, most recently about a year and a half ago when I brought a lovely Spotted Drum home in box bags in a cooler, strapped closed, and placed inside a soft nylon square luggage bag. Homeland security/DEA checked the cooler very carefully by drilling several holes in it, but they didn't bother the fish. Pics of the cooler and the fish, which is now magnificently fully grown, are on my Personal Profile. I doubt I'd try this if a long flight from Asia were involved. Even from the Caribbean it's difficult these days. Of course, I had the Fish and Wildlife declaration forms attached to the outside of the cooler. The complexity of connections, long flights, and legal issues makes bringing fish and inverts home from Asia a daunting prospect.
