Ball is rolling quickly!! Progress Thread

Here are some pic's of some of my rock after a wire brush scrubbing. After awhile I get some greenish algae that grows into the rock and the cleanup crew doesn't get it. The only way I've found to et it off is to scrub it with a stainless steel wire brush. The bigger the piece of rock the bigger the brush I use. I have 3 different sizes and the large one makes short work of the job.

That goby is good, they seem to be very hardy and great for a reef tank. Mine doesn't go out and sift the sand too much anymore, he's a little bit territorial but not really aggressive towards the other fish. I've had that thing forever.

Dang that first picture of Todd scare's me! He look's like he's trying to kill something LOL.

Now about the temp........... 90? that's crazy high, why did it get so hot? That won't be good if you ever get corals, they will want to die at that temp.
LOL! I noticed Todd's expression after I uploaded the photos onto my computer from the camera. It's just great!!

I've been really thinking about keeping that goby so its good to hear that there is a chance I can keep it. The goby is good size of about 4 inches long. I can see where it has sifted sand around :p Goby have been staying hidden. I expected that.

As for the temp, it gotten hot because it was 103 outside and AC or fan wasn't on. The tank is now hovering around 82 most of the time. I will need to invest in one of those little fan from walmart and mount it onto my sump. I know I'd have to top off more often if I am to do this method at least it'll be only for summer!

Huhhhh, do you clean your LR all of the time or only when your LR has nusiance algae on them? I almost am feeling too lazy to spruce up my LR at this time.

Maybe a couple times a year when it really starts bugging me. It's my own fault as I don't change my lights when I'm supposed to. I always push them for about 2 years.

Looks like the tank is comming along, I've got a few fans blowing across the top near the light. Helps keep er cool! Keep us posted.

I have my 12G in my dorm. I noticed this year they changed the tank size to 5 gallons, but I purchased this before I got this and last year it was a 10 gallon limit. The 12 doesn't look all the bigger than a 10. I just get water from Pet Paradise for like 75 cents a gallon.

At a guess CU is like this too, dang, I guess Ill need an apartment so I can keep my tanks, or atleast a tank thattl keep my clowns + their nem, and a small 5 gal for da mantis boyeeee

Rocmtnreef, I might have to mount a fan on the top of tank instead of sump as it would blow across the suface better.

Update: the tank needs a fan mounted on top of the tank, light bulbs, and an autotop off system. I need to refresh my mind on the autotop off system I want to use one for RO and kalk.

Here's a shot of rough rockscape. It will change again once I get the macros cured. Never mind the ugliness of rocks :D
Can you spot all 3 clowns? The breeder net is only in there for tomato clown. I have yet to be lucky in catching it. The female clarkii have been divebombing the tomato. Poor little thing!

Aquascaping should come along good once you start to get some stuff in there. You should try and do something with the back so that way you don't see the wires and stuff. Other than that its coming along good. I thought you had to cycle the water for longer before you could apply fish.

All the rock was cycled or from an existing tank, so she should not have any die off. The sand is new from a bag, so other than not having any critters in there it won't have any die off either. She should be able to add fish right away as long as they don't need pods to survive. My pink spot watchman goby ate frozen food, so hers should be fine.

Ah, yeah. I was aware you are taking a chance if you try to mix clown species. These clowns came from 55g and I couldn't decide which one to keep so I took them both home until I made up my mind :) On a "bright" note, I had to pull out a lot of LR to catch the tomato and now the tomato is safe and sound in the breeder net. Somebody should be coming down to pick it up :)

I saw the pink spot watchman goby going after flakes other day so that was encouraging sign because I didn't know exactly what it likes to eat. The previoius owners fed their fish flakes, pellets, brine shrimp (I think) and who knows what else.

I can't wait for my other nice large macros to cure so I can put it in the tank and then.... whooppee more rock rearrangement :p
However, I had somebody telling me that if the rock is dry and dead to just put it in the tank. What's your take?

I would rinse it and put it in. It was not shipped wet and "live" so clean it and use it. It already looks as though you have a good amount of LR in the tank.

Yeah, I do have a decent amount of LR in the tank. A lot of them doesn't appeal to me and I want to put in some largeish pieces of LR in there along with interesting looking smaller pieces in there. The extras ... I'll figure out something.. Maybe I'll just turn the 20L I have into FOWLR or get rid of the extras.

Will it be a bad thing if you shift around the rocks too much and exposing to air for a couple of seconds?

No, you will be fine. You can always fill a bucket with salt water and imerse them in there till you get them placed.

I decided to be a photo whore today... here's some pictures for you guys/gals.

Don't pay attention to the LR placement. I will be swaping some of them out for the ones I like and I will be scrubbing some of them down the road. Only 1 at a time so it doesn't have these algae on it anymore. I also will do something about the background. The plumbings isn't pretty

Here's a mini fan that I've rigged to blow on my tank water surface. It was getting around 84's and I had my heater set to 82... I turned that down to 79. The house also gets warm when we don't turn the AC on. The tank can get up around 88 if no AC when its real hot outside.

A couple shots of the tank with lights off, 10k on, 65k/10k on, and both on. I didn't mean to get the 65K/10K, I will put it over 20L for my project and get actinic down the road.

10K on
DSC02596.jpg

Here, I noticed that the flash occured when 65/10k was on. This gives you the idea that this light isn't as white as the 10k. It almost have a bit of pink tinge to it. I will try to take another picture of 65/10k alone without the dang flash coming on automatically.

Yes, you were so busy!!!!!! Don't tell Kathy you were so demanded upon!

definately a feather duster, fun to watch, no clue on the algae....

as far as the clowns having teeth, mine bite the living $*^! out of me whenever my hand stray's too close to their anemone.... relentless, hard biting with tough little teeth... and they manage to wiggle in and get me right between the fingers where it hurts just oh so bad. Then again I have evil clowns, so far they've mauled three hermits, two turbo's and an astrea all for getting too close to home... and then there's the whole shrimp missing arm thing....

Looks like the plumbing and everything went perfect! As far as the lighting, everyone seems to be a huge proponent of MH but I've had excellent luck with the corallife fixtures just like yours (the mounting feet are stupid though). When resources provide you can always do what I did and pick up a clip on MH to supplement, the 4X65W corallife and clip on 125W MH in my "high light area" work great, at first I thought I'd end up with an odd looking light in the tank but it looks nice and smooth on the 72 bowfront.

Rjc, I just hope that my clowns don't try to bite me in future!! I'd have to flick at them LOL!
The plumbing is working wonderfully. Todd did a such great job!

As for the lighting, I really don't want to have any metal halides right now. However, I might put corallife light over the 20L with that 10k/65k bulb and then buy new light kit for the 29g from here. I have the exact same reflector kit from there over my 55g (FW planted) and its working out really nicely. I like it a lot as long you don't get the bulbs from them. Their bulbs seem to have shorter life.

I'll be getting some hermits and shrimp(s) soon. I have some algae growing. I might also get some snails but I don't know what I want.
