Bangai pregnant!

I saw eggs inside the male Bangai's mouth yesterday. He is hardly able to eat. His mouth looks huge.

This is the first time I have noticed the Bangai eggs- what should I do next?

The pair is in my 180 G mixed reef.

Do nothing yet. Let the male do all the work. There are a number of threads on this forum that have active Bangai details. Subscribe to some of them and then watch and see what happens.

I have followed the advice and actions of some of the people on the forum and have just moved my male to the sump where we can manage the babies a little more after they are released.

The fist six that I have found their own way down, but this time we would like to see how many he actually has.

One thing that you will need to do, is to count the days and then start growing Baby Brine Shrimp for the little ones to eat.

Good luck and keep the posts coming.

Man-congrats.
For starters- your might want to read this http://www.reefs.org/library/talklog/f_marini_020799.html. SPk also provides good advice
Also just be aware that first time pregnant males will sometimes mess-up and abort the eggs. Its not a bad thing, its just a learning thing. The good news is since you have a pair -your in for many more broods.

Thanks.

Just wondering if I have to take him out of the tank, it would be impossible to catch him in my 180 G tank with a lot of hiding places!

Frank, your link is dead.

Man, They are not very hard to catch if you use the night attack method. You can find info on this method in the All Things Salty Forum.

Side note: I noticed you said he is"barely able to eat." Just so you know, he will not eat for the next 20-25 days.

Man,

My pair are always together and he has a corner of the tank that he goes to when there is food in the tank. So to catch him, I fed the tank, let the female disappear for food then netted him very easily.

I also transfered him in water rather than dry in the net. My thinking was I did not want him spitting the babies in the net if he got stressed.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

From my own experience i tend do mabye do things a little different to most. I need to know the exact day that he stops eating and then count 21 days forward.
At about day nineteen i catch him out of my display tank if he looks pretty full. Or should say attempt to catch him. Sometimes this takes a day or two, because a: my patience runs out or b: I am disturbing the rest of the tank to much.
I never let him spit them himself, i always induce it. Even if they are a couple of days prem, they will live of their egg sac until they can swim over to their new urchin. Then they will eat artemia just about straight away. I think this method gives me better numbers than most. Worst effort yet was the last hatch to an immature couple who were first timers and I still got 40 on the dot.

Cheers.

Doc,

I do envy you so. I am not sure what this next batch will produce, so I wait and see.

The male let the babies out day before yesterday in the tank. Saw two babies in the corner this morning and I netted them out. Drilled a few holes in a collection cup and hung it inside the tank.
Tried to feed them some crushed flake food. what else can I try to feed. They seem hungry!

Man,

You need to feed them baby brine shrimp. Takes about 12-24 hours to hatch them.
Steve

thanks spk......I will try to buy some if I can find them...the babies are about 1/2 " from the tip of their nose to the tip of the tail fin.

Brine Shrimp eggs are easy to find. If your LFS doesn't have them (and they almost certainly will), places that sell school supplies for science classes often have them. Look in the phone book for "teacher's supplies" or similar.

Last ditch effort would be a toy store for "sea monkeys."

Thanks Nicole
Just bought the Brine SHrimp Eggs ...getting ready to setup the hatchery.
Also picked up some Hikari food for the fry ...the babies are going for it. I will feed the fry food until Brine Shrimp are ready.

Fed them the Baby Brine this morning. they would not stop eating until it was all gone. How often do I feed them the baby brine?
