Bangaii baby photos

please do a search. Pyjamas do not breed totally the same as banggais. Yes they all mouth brood-thats the same. Only banggais hold the fry until they release 21 days after (1 week after hatching). The fry in banggais directly develop from egg to baby fish w/ no intermediate phase.

All other cardinals (expect pterapogons) release planktonic fry 7-10 days post
 
wattsupdoc--Congratulations! How many days are yours along?

ffrancica--The fry are in the same horse trough with the parents and a pair of clowns and, since I started to feed the fry, way too many Aiptasia. :) The fry seem to be doing fine but I think I probably lost more than I would have if I had raised them separately.

I finally got a marginal look at Papa cardinal today and it looks like he's juggling another mouthful! Plus, my LFS managed to track down some prawn eggs for me today, so I'm ready should he decide to let them go.

I also got a box from Aquatic Ecosystems today with a bunch of sponge filters for the fishroom (no one sells sponge filters in town, sigh). So, I think I'll set up a small tank with one so I can transfer the kids for further growout once it's cycled.

"Umm, fish?"- I wish I had the room to move them to a seperate tank but I don't. I think I'll see how they o the first time in the main tank then I'll try moving it to my sump. Thanks again. And the babies look awesome. How big would you say they are? 1/4" maybe?
 
They've just gone through another growth spurt. They're probably up to ~5/8" now and are to the point that some of them are getting multiple rows of spots on the pelvic fins.

Papa's definitely looking really distended this morning and I think I saw him juggle a bit. Sigh. Shy fish....
 
Excellent thread and photos. I had luck with frozen baby brine, but they were weened over to it with a mixed feeding of live bbs. As with any fish the key to a quick growout is to keep increasing the food size as their size increases. My bangaii program was live bbs, frozen bbs, cyclop-eeze, shaved enriched brine, enriched brine, shaved mysis, and sold around the time they got to full mysis. I would also add flake or pelleted foods crushed to proper size to try to condition them to those feeds also.
 
Thanks, Atticus! They are eating shaved mysis and shaved shrimp now. A couple of them tried Arctipods today. They seem a little small for full Artemia yet, though. I think I might keep this batch as future broodstock (especially if my kid has any say :) ). Thanks for your help.
 
I was trying to take a photo of the clownfish this afternoon as she has blown up like a balloon (right after eating the prawn eggs for the first time ;) ). I didn't have my macro lens, so I was just taking snapshots. But, I really liked this one and thought you might be able to see how much they've grown this week.

You mention a trough. What exactly are you talking about?

Not that it really matters, but it's actually two of the 100 gal. tubs connected together with two 2" pipes. The second one has some more live rock and chaeto. I used to pump water from one to the other but the pump died and lately I've just done top-off (~3 gals./day) in the rear tank and let that mix the water a bit. Probably too much information.... :)

Great thanks for the information. I am contemplating something for the outside of the fish room and the trough sounds like a good idea. Will have to see if I can get any, or anything equivelent.

I like the snagger that you have. That does look very interesting. Was that made from 2" pipe too?

spk--It's bigger than 2". I think it was 3", but only the T section. I found a 3" (or whatever) to 3/4" adapter, so the rest of it is 3/4".

Woohoo! Most of them tried out crushed Formula 2 flake today!!!!
 
A weird sort of half-crash of my tank this morning. I came in to find that a lot (but not all) of the amphipod population had died overnight. The fish were affected similarly: I lost my two B&W clowns, the filefish that I hadn't seen in months, and the adult female Banggai. The adult male Banggai and the seven baby Banggai that are still in this tank look fine, as do the corals and bristleworms.

I forgot to plug one of the powerheads back in last night, but another one was still running without fail.

Sigh.

The baby Banggai in the other tank is still doing well.
 
Sorry. I hope there'll be more soon. I love the Banggais and I think the world needs more of them, so I hope to more to post as soon as possible.
 
Nope. The babies are still going strong, though they have become more skittish since I netted out one a couple weeks ago so they hide from me now. I did a large water change "that" morning and added a big bag of GAC and that seems to have taken care of the problem, whatever it was.

Thanks, BTW. I really miss those clowns. There's a lot about this hobby that really sucks.

Just found dad this afternoon with a new mouthfull.. :) Soo excited..
Maybe you can help me with something..I was cleaning the fry tank, and I noticed a ton of little weird creatures..
They look like light pink, almost clear octopus things..they swim like it..they land on glass and they look just like a spider with 8-10 tentacles..but soo tiny..what are they?..
