Bangaii Cardinal

I have a Bangaii Cardinal that hasn't been eating and it looks as though his gills are kind of flared along with the area just under his mouth. All other fish in the tank are fine. Any ideas?

Can you get a picture? Is it an older, long term captive? Some fish develop thyroid hyperplasia (goiter) and this manifests itself by flared gills, as well as distension of the spot where the gills come together.

Oh yeah - just checking - do you happen to have another bangaii in the tank? These fish are mouthbrooders as you may know, and a male carrying eggs/young is not going to feed and is going to have a distended mouth just like you described (grin).

There are two Cardinals in the tank. I took some pics but it takes forever to upload them at home so I'll post them when I get to work in the morning.

Jhemdal's on to the possible reason as he said they are mouth brooders. It's a happy problem if that is the case, don't rule out disease quite yet though.

Here is a pic of what I was talking about. You can see both cardinals with the one on the right thats having the problem. I haven't seen him eat in over a week.

from that picture i'm more inclined to believe that he's pregnant :D as he doesn't seem to have any other external sign of disease.

Maybe you should post that picture on the breeders forum, maybe someone there can confirm or revoke our belief.

spinnerbayt,

Get your breeder net and live baby brine ready, looks like you will be having some baby bangaiis. Wait till the fish is looking at you and see if you can get a glimpse of eggs - or by now, possibly little tiny fish eyes looking out at you. That's so funny - at first I was thinking about goiter and all sorts of dire issues...and it turns out to be a good thing!
