Bangaii Egg Development Pics

Frank had asked for some pics of Bangaii eggs developing in the egg tumbler. Here is Day 2 thru 7 - this is from two different batches as I lost the first set on day 8 due to slow water flow...

One thing that I noticed today. Some of the eggs have broken free and have tails and fins. Just a large yolk sac with eyes and some fins.

Awesome jobv stephen-
As alex mention this fish has a direct development period. ie thhey skip any planktonic stage, so they go from eggs to little fishys. You photos are reflecting this

Stephen, I know I already asked this but can't remember the answer (old age sucks). Are you doing anything to prevent fungas in the hatcher tank? Has that been a problem?

Hiya David, I am not doing medicinal/chemical treatments for fungus. I am keeping the tumbler cranked up and the fast tumbling seems to help.

If you notice, the first 8 images are a different batch than the last ones. I had that batch tumbling REAL slow. (I thought I was beating the eggs up by having the flow too fast) Well I lost that batch to fungus on day 8 (see the white eggs).

Even with the tumbler going fast the mass still stays in the bottom of the tumbler, but really has a bunch of movement.

(see the white eggs).

Uh, yea... that's why I asked :D

I got a couple new ones today, large mature adults. I think they are both female but that's cool because I have unpaired males. ;)

Here are some updates. Missed a few days due to other things going on at the shop...

Today is day 21.

Frank I would love to sit down and talk to you over dinner at MACNA if you are available, dinner on me. :D

Stephen- your on......
Love the photos..
you and I will discuss this before MACNA, as your photos have inspired me to consider incorporating a timeline of development during my Banggai revisited talk

I have to ask, how vigourously are you tumbling these guys - I noticed mention of "slow water flow" as a culprit for losing a batch....

I really have no idea on the amount of flow in gph. It is fairly aggressive though as can be seen in the hatching video that is circulating around (no pun intended)

Hatching Video

With the batch following that used in the hatching video, I slowed down the flow in the tumbler what turned out to be too much as they were taken over by fungus fairly early in the process.

This batch (used for the photos here in this thread) were turned back up to an aggressive tumble.

HTH

I just have to say I really like the background songs on your videos !:D :D Can´t wait for the next one
By the way, cute cute cute little banggais ! Can´t wait to get started.
Anderson.

LOL! Well thanx! It's rough getting old and realizing that all the great music you grew up with is now "Classic Rock" :eek2:

Gonna finish off the photos with today's-

Day 21

They are just about all loose now...so I slowed the tumbler down a little to keep the individuals from washing over the exit spout. Lost a couple to that already...

Enjoy!

stephen-as always many thanks.
at day 21, I still see yolk, so no food yet, but get the BBS started cuz in a few days you'll have hungry banggers.

I'm curious...since a few of my banggais never held to day 21, yet still released full size fry, i winder if ex vivo culture has slowed down the process of development. I know many people still have males holding for up to 28-30 days. I'm starting to wonder why

Well I went back to the notes...the batch that was used for the video, started hatching on day 19 and seemed much more developed than these do. In fact the eggs looked like little round zebra's. They were from a different pair and I pulled the eggs on day 3-5.

This batch is from a pair that the male has never held past the night of day one so I had to pull this nest on day one. He has had 4 other chances and always spits the night of day one.

I don't feel (in my very limited experience) that artificial incubation has effected the nest...my best guess is temp...it is not a very controlled environment. Just a small heater for temp control.

It may be just this pair has eggs that develop slower? I guess I won't know for sure until their next batch...
