bangaii/ quarantine ?

I have 2 Bangaii cardinal fish and 1 six line wrasse in quar. I had 3 cardinals but one died within 24 hrs. I did a 5 min freshwater dip on each before I put in QT. I also started copper. The cardinals are not eating well. I think one has not eaten at all. They also are breating a little heavy. My question: do I have something going on or could it just be bad cardials? The six line is acting great eating like a pig, etc. I purchased 6 small tank raised clowns and need to pick them up today but They look good at the LFS and I don't want to bring them into QT and infect them. Also, do clowns tolerate a 5 min FW dip or should I not bother. They will be going into copper. By the way, what copper test kit works best? I have one that does not seem to work and am getting a new one today. My QT tank is a 30 gal long, cycled. My new fish have only been in since Thursday.

Thanks,

Tapm

Bangaii are mouth brooders. There is a slight chance it is holding eggs in its mouth and not eating. But more likely it is probably stress from whatever you are treating for or the copper.

I think I have FW dipped a clown before but not positive. I would only dip if there was a visible reason to do so (matching ph, temp and aerating the water).

I use Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Fresh/Saltwater Copper Test Kit and it seems OK. It is fast and consistant but a little difficult to read the color match but after some use I am happy with it.

Wild caught Banggia Cardinalfish has a very high mortality rate for largely unknown reasons. It could be internal parasites or cyanide or something else.

Clownfish do tend to handle FW dips well, but it is probably unnecessary since they are captive raised. But, if they have been exxposed to any wild caught fish, particularly other clownfish, I would administer a formalin bath against Brooklynella.

Thanks for your replies. All three have died now but my other fish in QT look great. They were little guys so I think it must be cyanide or somthing. They were clean when I did a necropsy and I am using the copper as a preventative before I put new guys into a 200 gal. so they never actually had anything I identified. Next time I'll stick with tank raised Bangaii's! Live and learn.
