Banggai Cardinalfish Breeding Log

OK here I go again. So might remember me from my maroon clownfish breeding thread. This time I will attemt to breed and raise Banggai Cardinalfish. I currently have two pairs of Banggai Cardinalfish in a 65 gallon reef tank. A few days ago I spotted the largest male with babies in his mouth. Wish me luck.

Now for a few photos.

Oh well that was short lived. The male decided to spit the babies out last night. Tonight he has his mouth shut and is taking food from me. He looks very thin. Also the female is already doing her shake dance for him. So she's ready to mate again real soon. I was really hoping to catch a few this time. Yesterday the male was hiding behind that red monti cap in the picture for most of the day. Today he's out in the open swimming around.

Batch #2:
Yesterday I noticed the male Banggai with a mouthful of, I hope eggs. Will count down the days until the release, better this time.

Good luck. My cardinals bred for the first time the other day, and we were really excited about it. Well, the next day my brother and girlfriend came over, and when we went to show them the cardinals, the male had apparently spit out/ate them. Booo! Judging by the post dates in this thread, mine may be ready to try again. :D

Again, good luck and keep us updated!

Good luck; Andy and nice to see you back around these parts again:D
Did you buy them as pairs? I am curious to how do you tell the male from the female?

Thanks dazed. I didn't buy them as a pair. Want I did was purchase five of them, and let them pair off. Four of them paired off and the fifth one died. So that left me with 2 pairs in a 65 gallon tank. Only on pair is breeding. As for your last question, I don't think anyone can tell the males from the females. Until they breed.

Batch #2 Update:
The male banggai should release the fry tonight or tomorrow night.. So It ook like I'll be staying up late. OK it too hot to drink coffee ...Where's the Monster's. LOL

This photo taken tonight before lights out.

Great job Andy ! Banggai are by far one of the coolest fish. And the more people breeding them the better. Good luck. I hope you have lots of little Bangers !

@rapture, Thanks !

@oceanarus, I just hope I can catch some this time. Next time I plan to take the male out of the DT.

You could also put him in a basket if anyone would be around to make sure and get the babies out asap. This is what a friend of mine does. Just go easy on the dad. But yes taking the male out is way easier than trying to go in after all the little ones. Good luck though this time !

Andy make sure though that the male can't jump out. I don't want that guy to end up on the floor or anything. I hope it works out for you.
