Banggai Cardinalfish Breeding Log

OK ... The male released only five fry last night by 1:00am. Then I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer. I will post pictures when I get to work. :beer:

Well here they are. I know the photos are hard to see, I will try to get better shots tonight. I have also changed my plan of putting them in my fuge. I have decided to place them in one of my 4 gallon cubes.

Thanks Amy ! It appeared the the male had more fry in his mouth at 1:00am. I just had to get some sleep. This morning there was no sign of any more. All five still alive before I left for work. I also feed a little BBS. They appear to be eating.

Andy how did you catch them anything special. Also what do you feed them?

Nope. Just a good old brine shrimp net. These guys are way bigger than clownfish larvae. They were trying to hide in my acros.

Don't use the net next time. You can kill them by using the net. Use a clear container or something. Feed the babies at least 2-3 times a day. Good luck..

Ok thanks. The reason im asking is im thinking about trying this but it might be hard to catch them in my 125g reef. Alot of places to hide

@TylerRt, I guess the idea thing would be to catch the adult male prior to the release. Mine would have no part of this. LOL

@Elite, it would be twice as hard to use a clear container. They hide in my acros for protection. A net fits in smaller places.

@dazed, thanks.

@oceanarus, I think there's something in the water. Good luck with your batch. How do you collect the banggai fry ?

Andy,
I set up a ten gallon tank with the main tanks water. I wait til it is about time for the male to spit the babies out. I feed him to bring him to the surface. Even if he isn't eating he will come up for some reason. I get him out with a specimen container. Sometimes I let him spit the babies out on his own. Other times I strip the babies out. If you are unfamilar with this you can look up stripping mouthbrooders and find out the best way to do it. It can be done with little harm to the male. But I do think it is always better if the male spits them out on his own. Hope this helps.

Amy
