Did you remove the parents from the tank after the release, or did you remove the fry?

We caught all of the babies and placed them in a floating breeder tank that is inside the 55 gal tank that they were born in. The parents are the only fish in the 55 so they can still visit them in the nursery so to speak. The babies are all eating and we (knock on wood) haven't lost any since the initial event. The dad is eating well (he hadn't eaten in a couple of weeks) and both parents are now swimming around where as before they were hiding with the mom standing guard. So far so good.....They are so tiny.....

I've heard that females can be pretty brutal on the males (as far as not giving them a rest between broods); so much that some folks keep two broodstock tanks with one male in each and alternate one female between them to give the poor guys a break!

Dave, do you know if the pair was wild caught or captive bred? Any decisions made on what you're going to do with the offspring?

I love hearing about this sort of thing!

She seems to be leaving him alone for right now. The pair is supposedly captive bred but I have no way of knowing for sure. As far as the offspring go, I will keep a few and hook up a few of the guys down here with some and sell the rest. So far the bunch is still eating and we haven't lost any since the two that were gone from the beginning.

Morning report:

We have lost a total of three so far. They may have been prematurely released when Vince scared the male and he spit them out all at once. The remaining babies (26) are doing well with the live and frozen brine as well as with the cyclopeze. They are still so tiny. The dad is still eating so the mom must be leaving him alone, for now.....

Yes it is.....
