Barbouri won't eat :(

My male barbouri started out eating just fine. I was feeding him and our female spirulina. Now the female eats more and he refuses to eat. She is very affectionate and protective of him. He looks skinny, no other external signs of disease, just thin. What could this mean? Am I feeding them the wrong kind of food? Is it a symptom of stress?

how old is this horse baby ? i ask cause spirulina is a fine food is it not. if the sh is older they need some frozen myosis.

Why are you feeding spirulina?
Seahorses need meat as in live/frozen mysis, amphipods, large copepods, or even brine shrimp. Most sold today have been trained to eat frozen foods.
I have never seen a seahorse eat a flake or pelleted food

The spirulina is a frozen mixture of mysis shrimp and brine shrimp. I am not sure about their age but they are both about 4-5 inches tall.

Hikari Mysis is what they are accustomed to eating! They will also eat live gut loaded adult brine shrimp but they main staple is Hikari Mysis.

Well I went to the lps and swooped up some frozen hikari mysis, and adult live brine shrimp. I placed a whole cube of the hikari in the water flow. Then I left the room and shut the filters off. I went back in 20min later and turned them back on. I think he ate a little. Currently I strained the brine shrimp and placed them in a 3 gal container of freshwater with finely crushed spirulina powder and an airstone. I plan on waiting about 8hrs and then feeding some of the live brine to my SH's. Does this sound like a plan?

First off, it's always better to thaw and rinse well, any frozen food you feed them. Also, don't overfeed, which I suspect a cube is for the stock you have.
I hope that by "freshwater" you mean fresh salt water as they don't live long in fresh water.
As for enrichment of the brine with crushed spirulina, it will work a lot better if you micronize the particles by putting them in a blender with some water and blending them for at least 2 minutes. You can store what you don't need in the refrigerator. Add just enough to lightly colour the enrichment water and if it clears, just add a touch more.
Food particles must be appropriately sized for the size of the brine or they won't take them in. (for adults, 50 microns or less)

Well, the male died :(. I tried everything I could. Over the course of the last two days I attempted to feed him cleaned and rinsed hikari mysis, and live adult brine shrimp that were gutloaded with spirulina. I cleaned the tank thoroughly and did a 5g water change (I do a 5-7g water change twice a week with substrate vacuum.) I spoke to the breeder I bought him from and it was suggested that I try a low dose of formulin because they treat their horses once a month. I tried that with no adverse effects but no positive either. He still just wouldn't eat and was much less active. I noticed his breathing was much faster at the end. This morning he was dead at the bottom of the tank, in my fake grass bed so I pulled him out and froze him. The female is still doing well, she is eating and even "hunting" the live brine. So now I have to take care of her and get her a tank mate again... To bad it's Saturday though, I can't order another one until monday.

Sorry for your loss. Will you give us a little more info about your Tank?

1: Tank size?

2: Equipment?

3: Temp?

4: How long the tank been set up for?

5: Tankmates?

Kind Regards,

Tim

Well after some great customer service, I received a call from the breeder (who lurks these forums ;) ) he felt like I did what I could and is sending me another male for free. As for the girly that's still left, she's vibrant. Truth is she isn't acting too upset about the male. Eating habits are good and she's still hunting.

The tanks is a 40g that's about 3' wide and 20" tall.

I have two penguin 350's that I run most of the time (except when feeding). The flow isn't as strong as you might think. They both were able to swim around freely. I have a pvc pipe with holes drilled and wrapped in a filter pad (so the sh's can't wrap their tales around it) with a bubble stone at the bottom. To keep the water aerated. For light I have a 24" T12 dual bulb setup with aquarium bulbs. I also recreate dawn and dusk with ambient lighting.

The temp sits between 72-75 degrees F.

The only tankmates right now are two turbo snails.

The tank has been set up for a couple months now. The only thing that was kept in it besides the sh's were damselfish (of course not at the same time). But I ran the tank for at least a week and did water changes before the sh's were placed in it.

Oh and the awesome breeder that I bought both of them from is seahorsesource.com. Just wanted to plug them because of how helpful they have been :-)
