I siphon alot maybe every other day, but I like knowing that I am getting all this crud out right away. I think a dsb refugium is a very good idea, and a really good skimmer. That is all I have and everything is doing fine with an sps dominated tank.

I agree. I have only about 75lbs of rock in a 120 gallon with no RDSB and a decent DIY skimmer, and my NO3 is always under 2ppm (salifert). I dont test for PO4, but do run PhosBan in a TLF reactor.
Filter socks on the drains and skimmer output changed weekly.
86X turnover in the display helps keep stuff nice and stirred up too!
my 180g is BB and I have a DSB in my fuge inthe sump along with a Euroreef skimmer..
My last tank was Barebottom also and had no fuge whatsoever and everything was always perfect Im trying out the fuge on this system though since it was incorporated into the sump I got with the tank

Again agreed, I have tried sand and fuge, bb and fuge, and now bb and no fuge large skimmer and large flow with prodibio and have a great tank that houses sps, hard to keep fish and a gigantea anemone.
plus in sump fuges are so messy;.
