Bare bottom?

+1 on loving the BB. Ive had DSB in 3 tanks and BB is by far the easiest to control. Although i miss the look.. :/

Does having an 1 3/4" sandbed underneath plexiglass count as a bare bottom. the sand is to support the plexi, cover plumbing and with the way it filled in the sides looks like a 2" sandbed but has bare plexi to put my rocks on. the only spots where anything can get under the plexi is in the corners and around plumbing. Think this will work or be a problem in the future?

Coraline will cover that plexiglass and you wont be able to see the sand. If it was me i would not do this at all. All that will happen is debris will get under that and you will have N / P leeching into your water. Alot of people put plexi on their BB and place the rocks ontop of it w/o a issue, but ive never seen someone put sand under it.

Had a 3" sand bed before I had to take down the tank for moving. After setting up the tank as bb couldn't be happier. Much easier to control algae wise and I can turn the vortech up as high as I want without having sand everywhere. My sps loves it.

I put sand under the plexi because i have 1" plumbing going across the bottom of my tank for loops, I just put the sand to level off across the pipes. I'll find out if it was a mistake or not but by then I'll hopefully have enough money for a bigger tank(much to my wife's dismay..LOL)

well so much for my plans, my Engineer Gobies got under the plexi at one end and I woke up to a pile of sand at one end of my Tank. Now I have to get some sand to match the rest!
