Barrel plumbing

I love your setup. My only worries I would be doing a water change and have the wrong valve open (after kids I seem to make more mistakes) and be putting fresh water into the tank stead of salt. Do you have any safety against this or just be careful and not do water changes when you tired???

I think I would rather have two seperate pumps one for saltwater pumped directly to my tank for water changes and another pump to do to my water container for top off. That way if I could not fill my tank with fresh water. I know it is money, but seems like it might be worth it considering the cost of everything else.

But you probuably already have a fail safe you seem to have thought of everything.

Wardaddy - some great ideas there - I'll draw up some more details of yours and we might get 5 to 10 different setups out of this - which would be great. I'll post everything on my web site so they are always available and easy to get too. The more ideas to fine tune these the better. I'm after automation but at a price I can afford as we all are :D.


guntercb - some great thoughts and you brought up some issues that once I get the basic design down, we can make it "I have kids" or "I'm old and just can't remember"proof :D.
 
Only the saltwater pipe will go into the sump, so I will have to open a ball valve on the sump end to get salt water. If I have it set for fresh water in the garage, no water will come out. The fresh water pipe will only go to a auto top-off system. So as long as the valves in the garage are correct, I should be ok. I have a military background and have taken flying lessons. I'm very much a "check list" oriented person, so I'm setting up the system that way.
 
OK MFLamb- First I have step 1 which connects the view areas - are these correct? It seems when building both are the same - correct?

Step 2 is the connection between the top RO barrel and the Bottom Saltwater Barrel - is this correct?

Step 3 will be coming - (not complete) it will be the barrel connections and the pump with proper mounting orientation.

Let me know where I strayed - please - and please of patience with me :).

I added some different connectors/pipe just to bring everything together - is this basically your layout design?

Thanks boydx6 for the offer. What they did the last time was one of the guys there loaded them for me and I just had to tie it down. So it was easy for me, they are very nice at the plant so I should be good - but thank you very much for the offer. I think I'll just fill the truck to the max - 5 or 6 barrels and strap them down. Put them all in the pool and I'll let everyone know after I get them in - you all can decide how long you would like for them to "Cure". If you have a truck then I'll have you come after your barrel, if you don't have a truck or a means of transporting them I'll deliver in the St Pete, Seminole/Largo and Clearwater area. that is only if you can not transport - these are great for storing water.

If you keep it to a check list you are fine. If you fly you know that the guys that follow checklist and do the procedures are fine. It is when you rush and stop using the checklist that accidents happen. I like your system and it sounds like you are on top of it.

The only problem I would have with your set up is the water left in the long pipe from the tank to the sump. In the summer, that pipe will get a little warm. Warm stagnant water is not desirable.

I am not sure that it is of any real concern, but may be worth considering (I am sure you have).

Weekly, I would bet you will be fine. Although I bet there is a slight odor to the first few gallons that come out. I am sure it will not be anything that you will have to worry about though.

If you wait a month, I would consider dumping that first few gallons in a 5 gallon bucket.
 
I can not wait to see your system, it will look so refined compared to mine. I will have a usable, but not pretty setup.
 
MFLamb - that's what I was thinking about your tank - you change your water weekly like me. Your RO/DI side will be running with the top off right? If so then that will be running all the time - at least every few hours. Salt - yeah that would be the only pipe and after the first few times you will know if you have an issue or not - summer is just around the corner :D.
