Barricuda Pump Noise

I'm not necessarily new, but i am new to setting up a bigger tank. I recently bought a used 180 RR, with a 55 sump. The seller had a reeflo barricuda pump on his system, so I got that as well. Now that I have water in it, the pump seems a lot louder than I remember seeing it set up. I have a towel underneath, with screws to hold it down, but am wondering whether I should improve the sound dampening with a styrofoam support/box, or be concerned about pump operation. Anyone have this pump or have any thoughts?

I run a Reeflo Dart on my closed loop. Works great, very quite!
The only thing, that I know of,that will cause a Dart, Barracuda, or Hammerhead to make a lot of noise is if you reduce the the intake on the pump. If you reduce the intake it will cause the pump to cavetate.

To my knowledge, the only place you can restrict flow on one of these pumps is the output side.

There are no restrictions on the intake. I do have a ball valve to allow for pump removal, but corresponded with reeflo to confirm this was OK. I don't think cavitation is issue.

My inquiry is based solely upon whether the standard pump operation is distracting. I guess maybe there aren't too many people that own the pumps...

you might want to repost this question in the filtration forum

I had a mag3600 that was really loud---when I took the impeller out it had one of the fins broken.
You might want to inspect the impeller on your baracudda.

I have a true union ball valve on my intake and output for easy removal. It does not cause any problems as long as you don't restrict the intake.

To answer the basic question in the second part of your statement. NO, the basic operation is not distracting. I cannot hear mine running. I have to stick my head in the tank stand to make sure it's running, when in doubt.
