Barry's 29gal Coralife BioCube

Skimmer should still be collecting, unless perhaps your water isn't very "dirty" to begin with, and the carbon in the reactor is taking away any excess nutrients? Sounds logical, but I have no clue if its true or not, or even feasible.

I did at first notice a decrease in skimmate when hooking up my reactor, but it was back to normal in a few days.

I may be jumping the gun on what my skimmer is collecting. The reactor
has only ran one full day. I will give a few days before I worry to much about it.
Thanks again for all the help,
Barry

Yeah, I suspect your skimmer isn't skimming as well because of some surficant that was introduced with the new product (either on your hands, or on the carbon, or on/in the reactor). It'll probably be back to normal soon enough, even while running carbon/GFO.

I wouldn't worry too much for a few days. If it continues for a week+ and you're having a hard time keeping down nutrients, then I'd take a deeper dive on it.

Red Sea test kit (Problems)

Red Sea test kit (Problems)

Hi All,
I just got a Reef Foundation Pro test kit (and having problems)
How do you get the reagent dropper to get full. There must be a trick.
No matter what I try I can't seem get a full ml. in the dropper.
HELP....................................................
Barry

With the tip on it will never be full. Just use the bottom of the plunger, set that at the max amount. The resulting air bubble is the extra fluid that is in the tip. When you count how much reagent you've used, you use the bottom of the plunger not where the fluid is.

Seachem has a youtube channel on all their test kits and how to use them.

Homer and southpatch thanks again for your help.
Well I really f@@ked-up this afterrnoon. Working on my tank I spilled water IN my hood, you
guessed it I burnt up my nanobox lights.............................
I have an email into Dave, not sure how bad it is yet. Sent him photos of the damaged parts.
I have an old hood of an old 55 saltwater tank for now, it will get me by for a few days.
Barry

Thanks soulpatch, The old light will get me by.
Here is a photo of what I burnt out. I think he will send me a new one.
I hope.
Barry

Yup, burned out the driver. Easily swappable, but you might have to cut and strip back some of that wire to get to unburnt wire.

That's one of my biggest fears with all the automation and such that goes with these tanks nowadays, and specially with our biocubes with 99% of the electronics mounted under a big glass tank full of water.

Dave at nanobox is real good at helping, I sure he will send the replacement
drivers in the morning, I hope. Here is a photo of my SICK BC.
Thanks for your input Homer.

Glad you got it figured out. It's interesting how it burned like that. That's why I like DIY/swappable boards like the one RapidLED sells (sorry I talk so much about RLED), because if a driver burns you, you pull it from the socket, toss another one in, and you're on your way. The wires can be left in place if they haven't arced or burned through or whatever.

I'm glad you didn't have any larger issues though. Hopefully the replacement comes soon. I know I waited a week between replacing my vortech, thinking that just a korallia nano would be fine, but I've paid the price with most of my corals browning out. Hopefully your light is fine for the meantime, and most importantly I'm glad you and the tank are safe.

Hi All,
On my newly installed gfo/carbon reactor how ofren should I change the media?
I'm still waiting on my replacement drivers for my lights.
Barry

I go by my weekly water tests, when my phosphates start going up, change them out. You unfortunately use way more carbon then normal(the GFO runs out long before the carbon does), but it does keep the water nice and clean unlike waiting till the carbon is exhausted.

I run cheap carbon because of the early change out(petsmart 10$ for a huge box). I would hate to throw away good carbon that was super expensive (BRS ROX carbon), which I was doing at first. I notice no difference running the cheaper stuff either, I believe its because of how early you end up changing it.

cheap carbon in a reactor is going to be better then good carbon in a bag.

That said I change out nearly weekly/biweekly and will only go through a $40 container in a year or so. Cheap for this hobby in my mind for something that does so much. I guess I could save $10 a year and get cheaper carbon but that is such a minimal amount I would rather get the better stuff I dont have to rinse and removes more from water...

New drivers installed

New drivers installed

The new drivers arrived and are installed. Things should get back to normal
in a few days.
Barry

Great new Barry. Hopefully just a small bump for you and you are bacjk to normal in days
I'm going to have to reacclimate the corals and such, after almost no light for five days.
Nonabox is a great to work with. They sent out the replacement dirvers the same day I talk
to him.
Barry

Shouldn't have to reacclimate them, they should welcome the bright light after being with hardly none for the last couple days.

Glad your back up and running though, I know how stressful a situation like that can be.
