Barry's 29gal Coralife BioCube

LFS I went to today had a 350G display tank, and had a huge colony of black sun coral. I so want one now!!!

Nice looking specimen Barry. I'm so jelous now after seeing one up close and personal.

What is it??

What is it??

Hi All,
Friday is tank cleaning day for me. Check out the photo, in the center of the blue circle is some sort of algae. This is the first time in over eight months I seen any thing like it.
Problem? and cure?

cyano/diatomes. Probably cyan.

Siphon it out, increase flow to the area, decrease feeding/nutrients. :-/
Thanks ReefWreak. I increase the flow. I think my problem is my two sun corals.
They are hard to feed with out over feeding. I guess there going on a diet:fun2:

I am having a cyano outbreak at the moment. I guess killing off my bryopsis lead to extra nutrients for cyano. It is always something.

I just suck it out using my awesome battery power vac in between water changes. I also need to get back up to speed on some of my nopox dosing. I had cut it which has also led to the excess nutrients in the water.

And I suffer for the same reason you do. Coral feeding. I want my acans to grow quickly so I need to feed each head individually. Takes forever and the food that they dont hang onto is excess for the tank. I have cut down their feedings to a couple times a week in an effort to minimize this all.

soulpatch tell about your battery power vac, and where did you get it.

This is what I have and probably the best <$10 I spent on the aquarium yet:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003OYOPNW?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00

I take the attachment off the tip so it is just a hose end for more precise pick up of the cyano. It can clean the sand witht hat attachment if I wanted but I do that with water changes so no need. I use this simply to get algae or debris in the tank like in my dead spots.

Works awesome.
Ordered one on ebay for $12.00 free shipping.
Thanks for the information

Quick question for you BarryV....

What are you feeding your sun coral? I was thinking tiny shrimp and/or scallop bits, or forgo that for reef frenzy? My LFS said he feeds his sun corals the reef frenzy, but I think its a tad bit pricey for what it is.

Also you take it out of the tank to feed it? Does it open right back up in a bucket? nearly 20 hours in my tank and I have yet to see it open.

I have reef frenzy I feed occasionally and the fish and corals go nuts for it. You could make your own easily but I am lazy and it is well worth the price to me

Hi Homer,
I feed my sun corals a variety of food . Mysis shrimp, Brine shrimp, Red and Black worms.
For getting them started I do take the sun coral out in a Tupper ware container filled with tank water
and put some stinky food to get them to open. It may take up to 45 mins. for them to open. Once open I add Mysis shrimp Red worms what ever you
want to try.
I think when you first get a sun coral the are half starved to death. It is very important to force feed
them.
Here are a few links on there care and feeding.

Black Sun Coral update 2

Black Sun Coral update 2

Hi All,
I just finished feeding my Black Sun Coral this afternoon. This is
the most it has opened and eaten since I got him 6 days ago.
I went to the fish market this morning a bought a few shrimp and a few clams.
Whip them up in the food processor, it seem to really like it.

I can get mine to poke their heads out in a tupperware container, but I never see any tentacles looking to grab some food. I did force a head to eat by holding a mysis on it, but its the only polyp I could get to do it.

I have moved it to a place of high flow and low light(read that's what they like it since they are typically found in caves), and I notice their heads poking out, but yet again, no PE, just bare heads with mouths poking out. Might try some different food. The reef frenzy seems to garner a response, but they just won't eat it.

Hi Homer,
Why don't you try this, Put you Back sun coral in your Tupperware bowl
put in a dark room, cover the top with card board or something. Put your stinky mix in. I put a lot in when I feed. It may take up till an hour. Once
they open put your mysis or brine shrimp in. Keep the food agitated. Use a flashlight to check on them.
Let my know how it goes.

This is exactly what I've been doing.

Tank water in a tupperware container, I melt the reef frenzy in the tupperware with my fingers(quite a bit I might add), let them sit for an hour or so. I do check on them with a flashlight, and I just have yet to see any PE.

I'll have to try putting a cover on them and see if it makes any difference. I put way more reef frenzy in the tupperware bowl with them then I would feed the whole tank at one time. After an hour or so with no eating response(again they poke their heads out, but I never see any tentacles trying to grab for food) I just place them back in my tank and dump the bowl in too.

I wonder if its cause the way my frag is it can't stand up in the bowl? it has to lay on its side covering up some of the heads. I do have a rather large frag disk my monti is sitting on that I could remove and glue the sun too. Thoughts?

Well I am at a loss. The only thing I have used on my two sun corals to get them to eat
is Cyclops mix with reef chili. I per-mix the two and at it to the corals. Once the corals open ad mysis of brine shrimp.
Homer why don't you ask in the (Non-Photosynthetic Corals Forums). There are some knowledgeable people there
on Non-Photosynthetic Corals.

I was just thinking the same thing, posting in the NPS section. Im sure its fine and this is only the third day with it, but I really want it to thrive in my tank. My wife wants a red or yellow sun coral, but not until I can get this black one thriving. Just figured I would bounce some questions off someone who actually owns one.

8 Months old today

8 Months old today

Well my tank is eight months old today. After looking at this photo
I think I have to much equipment in this small tank.
Photo 1, Day 1
Photo 2, 242 days or eight months.
But who is counting.

It's beautiful progression for sure.

Equipment wise, you could try moving the korallia to the back corner blowing upwards towards the front glass. I'd definitely hide the frag rack better too :p

But honestly, your tank looks great, nice and mature, and growing in as well. Lots of room for things to grow too. I'm a little scared that within the next 6 months all of my acros will be growing into each other. A good problem to have I suppose!

Thanks ReefWreak,
Friday is water change day and I will most likely move the frag rack and
rearrange the power heads. It's been FUN.
