Base Rock

Does it matter where or what kind of base rock I buy? If it is cheaper than $2.99lb at the local rock supply could I buy it there and still be safe for my reef?

it should be calcium based, and the more porous the better, but yes - the local landscaping place can work just fine. All of my base rock came local sources (Columbus Stone Co)

go to craigslist and just find someone selling live rock for 3 dollars a lb... you get to meet local reefers, and you get a connection for the future

Ok this is an completely UNSOLICITED post. I am setting up a 90g tank from scratch and today I received 100lbs of base rock from TampaBay saltwater. Amazing stuff. Truly. It looks exactly like their website sample pics, honeycombed holes, neat pieces for overhangs and caves. I couldn't be more pleased. And the best part, only 1.50 per pound. Not sure what shipping would be for you, but I just wanted to throw this out as an option. My LFS is selling base rock for 2.99/pound and it's not close to this quality.

you can get Fiji Foundation Rock at dfs for 69.00 for 35 pounds or Fiji Standard Live Rock 79.00 for 45 pounds.
