Basement Sump Question

Quick question for those folks with a basement sump:

Is there a problem with excessive turbulence (as the water enters the sump) resulting from the height differential?

I'm planning a sump which likely be 12 feet below my display tank: seems like the water would pick up enough speed that it would cause quite a bit of splashing as it entered the sump.

If so, what have you done to circumvent this?

and/or you can have it dump directly into a closed box with holes drilled in it to contain all the splashing.

I've used a piece of 4" or 6" PVC suspended a couple inches off the bottom and extended around 1' up past the water level. It keeps the splashing down and works as a bubble trap.
