basement sump vs in cabinent

Anyone have an idea how much more it would cost in electricity to run sump in basement? I'm sure it depends on the pump which I don't have yet but any ballpark figure?

It depends. If you locate the sump directly below the aquarium in the basement, the extra cost won't be significant.
If you locate the sump on the other side of the house in the basement, the costs could be very significant.

Working head is what your pump is pushing against. This is what you need to compare.

Another issue is heat---basement sumps in this neck of the woods obviate the need for a chiller....thus saving some kilowatts.

A couple of other factors to consider: noise and space.
Locating a sump in the basement hides the noises that pumps and skimmers make. It also gives you a lot of access to your equipment. Contorting my body to work on plumbing inside a cramped aquarium stand isn't my idea of fun!

noise is the orginal reason I thought in the cellar and since I can set up right under the tank I figured why not.

I agree with everybody. If you have the remotest need to run the filter and can plumb immediately below the tank, a basement sump's electrical consumption won't begin to compare to the consumption cost of a chiller.

Sandy, it's my opinion that only a good percentage of water need flow though the basement sump. Use a big powerhead(s) or a closed loop for most of your waterflow if you want to save power. You'll still need a good sized pressure rated pump though, just not one that pumps 20X turnover.
