Basic Maxima Question...

They generaly prefer the sand, but some will atach to rock, the croceas love the rocks...and over time in the wild will fully inbed in the rock work....maximas will only inbed say 20% to 33% of there size in the rock work...if you can get them to atach, but try the sandbed first if you have enough light to keep one on your sandbed....
 
They are not necessarily "rock dwellers" like the croceas, but they prefer to have somethign solid to attach their byssal threads to, whether placed in the rock or the sand. Many people use a large shell or flat piece of rock.
 
Second what peabody says. They do better when attached. If in the sand, bury a rock for them to attach to.
