Battle of the Tangs!!

Ok I just want some opinions on the size of a tank a Valmingi tang will need as an adult. Most of what I read says 180 gal, most people say bigger than that. I'm not sure what to think, cause I also believe that no one person can judge the size tank a fish will actually need. This opinion coming from the fact that fish come from the ocean, and I don't think anyone has the ocean in thier house. Except for maybe Nook he is pretty close.

For the record I don't disagree the fact that these tangs need a large tank I only want opinions of how big everyone thinks, and how small is too small.

Come over I will show you how big they get. My Mom and Dad have a 375 and that IMO is still to small.

I will later they have two. One is in there 375 about 15inches they other one is in a 200 and he is about 18 inches we are going to move the one in the 200 to a 300 but I think it will still be to big even for that.

ok so how do you know a tank is too small? Does the behavior of the fish change? Eating habits etc.

All of the above as well as the all important Life Span and health. too small of a tank and they start stressing and dying on you. DO some homework and find out how big they get

I know how big they get and I have done my homework. I can only read so much hence this post to get opinions. I have done fish for a long time now so I'm no idiot to the reason for requirements. I asked for opinions, I have read many articles books etc. saying 180 gals is big enough, but no one believes it is. Which again is why I posted this to get new opinions from people that have them.

I think why people on here say that 180 is to small is they grow to fast for a 180. Before you know it, it will have out grown your tank.

i am by no means an expert but some people think it it not so much how much water is in the tank but how much swimming room is in there. a 180 with not a whole lot of rock is diffrent from a 180 with rock stacked to the top with sps colonies everywhare. also a 150 4 foot tank has let swimming room then a 180 that is 6 foot. and it only has 30 more gallons.
just some food for though. i am building a 150 and found i am not going to have much more swimming room than my 75 so i am going to try to keep the rock placement open to get more swiming room.

i bought a small one a year and a half ago and he has grown arround 3-4 inches since then... and i can tell he is ready to get out of the 110g, he will be much happier this week when the 210g comes online

I think the Vlamingi needs a tank in the 300-500g range minimally.

Nanook, I told the wife that and she said good luck with that... when we move I will have to convince her that it is needed :)

Nook told me to buy a big tank once because I would want a bigger tank after a year. So I bought the bigger tank "215" and I still want a bigger tank. Now it's harder to persuade the wife for a bigger tank. Go big or go to bed and dream about it. Upgrading is what you should have bought in the first place. Even if it takes 20 years "nook-cough-cough" :D but don't listen to me I should be in a mental institute

 That is ideally the smallest tank I would like to see one in...not scientific fact or nothing...I just know they grow BIG FAST and look pretty cramped in smaller tanks...they even look cramped in larger tanks when they get big....

When you moving:D?

mjpelikan, I have 2 in my 375, they have been with me from my 125-210 to now in the 375, great fish but they do need the 8' tank for swim room. Mine seem to be perfectly happy & they are over 1" thick.
Also housed with a 15" Schoal tang, but not suggested he is a bully.
Keep it quiet but i have 12 tangs in the same tank:eek1:

That is more like a fetish:D

I'm lookin into a bigger tank and I was interested in the Valmingi. I am trying to research my whole stock list way a ahead of time so I am ready. I would like to start collecting fish and get them eating and then switch to the large tank when it is ready. I was originally looking into a 180 due to a fair size and a good price for that size, but now I'm thinking bigger. Problem is, that with bigger tank comes a bigger price tag, with the tank and equipment. All of the equipment I have now would convert straight over to the 180 if that is what I go with.
