Bayer AEFW death comfirmation?

hey there,

Curious to see if anyone has confirmed that Bayer does indeed kill AEFW, and if so, at what dosage?

Bayer does not kill Montipora Eating Nudibranchs

thanks for your time

Ives used Batet to kill monti eating nudis at 20ml of Bauer per cup of water it shriveled them up as far as aefw same dosage and the die for sure with me

put a nudi in a cap from a milk jug with 1/4" or less tank water and a few drops of bayer, an hour later the nudi was still cruising...

Sometimes yes and sometimes no. I've run a bunch of tests as part of my pre-AEFW study.

For the most part Bayer does NOT kill the AEFW. It stuns them, and they fall off the acros. Even though they look dead, curled up perfectly motionless, when returned to clean saltwater they sometimes recover and begin cruising around after some time.

It also depends on how hardy your particular AEFW are. One variety I have will actually die in the dip. My other variety, at the exact concentration that killed my first variety, are hardly even stunned by it.

So you need to be careful. Good circulation at some point during the dip (can be from a baster or similar) is necessary, as the AEFW need to be knocked off the acros. If they remain on the acros despite being stunned and motionless, when the acro is returned to clean saltwater they may come back alive.

For reference, I use a pretty concentrated dip - 10ml Bayer per 1 cup tank water. Also done 20ml Bayer per 1 cup, more AEFW are killed than stunned at that level (for my more normal variety, my super hardy ones still hardly blink). I dip for 3-5 min.

I have always used 10ml of Bayer in 4 ounces of saltwater for the dip, 5 minutes minimum, 15 minutes maximum, usually 7-8 minutes and I have always removed plug from frag and discarded original plug before dipping, always.

I use Bayer Advanced Complete Insect Killer for Soil and Turf Concentrate, there are different versions of Bayer Advanced

Tektite, I am astonished that you observed survival, now that is really really scary. Up until your comment in this thread, I have felt safe with my protocol. Stunned and not killed, wow!

It really depends on the AEFW themselves. I was really shocked to observe such a difference in hardiness in AEFW obtained from different sources. I suspect the easier ones to kill are much more prevalent than the hardy variety I obtained. The guy I got them from had tried several rounds of weekly dipping, but despite dipping them once a week for weeks on end, every time he decided he was free of them and stopped dipping, they came back. This is not the case with most people's AEFW though, so far he's a statistical outlier. I'm very glad I got my hands on his kind, it will be good to compare test results between different populations of AEFW.

Off topic, but if there's a bunch of mini brittle stars left in the Bayer after the dip, they sometimes come back to life too when returned to clean saltwater :)

thanks Tektite for all your hard work

guess I got (hopefully had) the hardy ones.

yes the bayer would knock them off, but after seeing one cruising around in the rinse container after a dip I wasn't fully convinced Bayer kills them

I went back to Revive and Coral RX so I could see if any fw were falling off the Acro. Not so easy to see what comes off in the cloudy Bayer

ok here you go

found three AEFW, corals were dipped in Revive to dislodge them, then placed back in tank water.
cell phone pics but you will get the idea

bayer used

10ml tank water, 1.25ml bayer I roughly broke down the 20ml per cup, hope someone will check my math

Placed the three AEFW in Bayer solution for 5 minutes

One for sure, possibly two of the AEFW were damaged when transferring into solution

if you look closely you can see three dark spots, that's the enemy

AEFW were removed from Bayer Solution, one was damaged prior to going into solution and fell apart, the other fell apart taking out of solution.

The third is Alive and Moving in the tank water, uncurled itself and stuck to the bottom of the container

so my conclusion is Bayer does not completely kill AEFW,

I agree, Bayer stuns them and they fall off the coral. That's is where Bayer is still good to use because the flatworms are very hard to see. Dipping gets rid of them, one just needs to remove the coral once the flatworms are dislodged. If you really want to kill them afterwards, pour some more Bayer, but what for? I just toss them out.
