BB 300G tank build 100g sump

Hi Phxkeller,

Thanks for posting your progress. I am in process of rebuilding my reef tank after a relo, so am enjoying your thread... Hey invincible569 it's been a long time. Hope all is well with you.

I also have the 1/2hp version of this chiller, and agree with invincible569 that you may want to consider your placement of the chiller. The three comments I'd share is,

1. Pump size -- I ended up moving from a Mak-4 to a Mak 5 (PCX 100). I was pushing water up 1 floor, so your mileage will vary, but I did need a much beefier pump.
2. Sound -- The chiller makes a noticeable hum. I also had mine in a dedicated fish room, so it was not an issue to me. It may be to you though given it's near your living space.
3. Heat - The unit does put out some heat. Again, I had a dedicated air-conditioned fish room, but I expect in a close space, you may have issues with this.

Anyway your setup is looking nice.

Thanks for the replies and info !!

invincible569:
I enjoyed your thread very much and love the sump. Thanks for the advise with the chiller (I'll reconsider).. Its running off the return for the tank (dart) Not what I originally planned but the dolphin on the CL WAY to strong for return/flow in the sump.

rallendorph:
Thanks for the input! I WISH I had a fish room.. Not sure what I can do about it so far.. I'm going to have to reconsider the placement probably at a later time I'd like to get it up and running and make smaller changes later on ( I think )

Chrisrush:
Thanks for reply! I really like it.. I have not use for the tunze controller wish I did not have to pay for something that is not going to be used. Especially for such an ala carte system. Even though the ACIII has the same options it seems It could have a wider use.

Thanks all !
Frank

I have cut out a few pumps using the system this way. I have the skimmer gravity fed, return feeds the chiller so thats 2 less pumps. the CA reactor feed with powerhead. no powerheads inside the tank (I'd like to keep it that way). And as far as lights I'd love to use the solar tubes.. but Still working on that one. The A/C for the house runs all summer so we dont get to SAVE much when it comes to energy.
I just realized I commented on your sump Gab above oopos sorry invincible

I am really interested in your solar tubes. I have bounced them around in my mind for a while. i am just not sure if I want to put a hole in my roof. But they have got to save on electric and lighting cost. I thought about having a couple mh and a couple tubes. have you thought about mixing it up?

Ready for updates

Ready for updates

Tank is ready for filling .. live rock and coral moved over for the most part.. it looks so small in the new tank

That was the way to go.. of course I did order 400Gallons.

O YEA for got some good news and some updates...

No luck getting the solar tubes at this time... So I picked up a aquamedic 72" 3x250MH w 150x2 MH.. So Im giving that a temporary try untill I get the solar tubes.

Also Went and ordered my controller today.. Got the Profilux Plus II eX version. So I pretty much got it all but the wireless lan. Cant wait to get that in !!!

Full and Ready...

Full and Ready...

SO now its full flow is great ... I did change out the OM nozzels from the sump return to 3 1" penductors.. They keep the surface agetated perfectly .. not to violent and no air sucking noises.

Also working on some PVC racks .. that has been frustrating so far... but Im not giving up yet..

Here is the latest shot

Overall very happy with the minimal water sounds and pumps are very quiet.. chiller runs hardly now that we are in the cooler months... but its not to bad compaired to the others i've tried.

Looks awesome....The flex pvc that you used what type is it and were did you get it? I have seen several different types and colors and was not sure if it mattered what you use. Thanks for the input BILL

Ace Hardware, homedepot, and lowes all had SPA-FLEX tube in the plumbing/pipe section on rolls.

I also found a lighter weight Black PVC tubing at my local fish store OF Course after I bought and plumbed this stuff...

Is it safe to say that all flexible PVC is safe to use regaurdless of the color and flexibility?

as long as they are not treated for molds. It should be a drinking water safe PVC.

I would call them to find out if they are treated or not.. I dont believe so .. but I dont sell the stuff so ask them to make sure!

Hope that helps..

OK thank you for the help......A friend of mine used that mold treated silicone to fix his tank. I wonder what it will do. It has been months since he did it and all is fine.

Another question I have why does everyone seem to use the grey fittings? I can get a regular white ball valve for like $8. But the grey sch 80 is like $25.

i think if you spend 1000s of dollors on your tank you dont want to risk a 8 dollor fitting plus i belive the gray can hold more pessure

RBU1: from having both sch 40 (white) and sch 80 (grey) I have found the quality and reliability of the more expensive to be well worth the money spend for piece of mind and reliability....

I ordered this stuff from savko online and I would do it all over again.. and I know Im well over $800 in plumbing parts...

Since we really dont deal with very high pressures in our systems I dont know really how much that has to play in it... I dont worry or calculate pressures...

Aquascaping Done.... What do you think

Aquascaping Done.... What do you think

Well I would leave aquascaping to the artists.. I did what I could and this is what I came up with...
