Bears

My buddies and I were out mtn biking tonight. As we're tooling along my friend looks off to the side and causually nods and gestures in a non chalant way. I glance over and not more than 15 feet from the trail is a black bear walking along a log parallel to us. No biggie, afterall we live in Alaska :). We stopped a ways up the trail to see what she would do, then noticed the cubs. Generally not a good thing to be near a bear with cubs. We were a good distance away though and she was quite aware of our presence and was not aggitated in anyway. We watch for a few mins and casually she walked out onto the trail. She checked us out a bit, then seemed to motion her cubs it was all clear. Two little cubs poked heads out from the bushes. Then mom crossed the trail and in tow three little cubs bound across the trail. You just have to love living in Alaska!

Made me miss my trip to the McNeil River falls. I posted one from that trip for nostalgic reasons, and your enjoyment :).

Cheers!

Still using your pictures to convince Mrs. Wolverine that we need to go to Alaska soon.

You take that second shot with a 24 or 35mm lens? :D

LOL - it was with a 15mm fisheye :). Actually it was a 200mm and I cropped it. This was at McNeil falls. A very unique place where we literally had brown bears walking within 10 of us, sometimes less! It was un-nerving at times but it is guided and generations of bears are there and are used to the predictablity of people being there. There were times where the bears were literally too close for me to get them in focus. The group always arrives and leaves at the same time of the day. They always stay in the same place. Basically a 10x20 foot gravel pad. Bears don't come on the pad and people don't leave it. We literally had bears sleeping 15 feet away from us. We essentially became part of the landscape for them. Also there was TONS of fish so they were all well fed :). It is a remote place, primative lodging, and probably one the most memorable and unique expereinces I've ever had!
