Before and After LED

Hi y'all

I live in SGV. I just want to share with you my tank before my LED light dropped in the water. After switching to a Power Compact lighting....this is what happens. I got the green light to purchase a cheap and affordable LED light for now (....of course Made from China). Come on USA, why are we lagging in the a affordable LED lighting??

So, today hopefully this deal goes through and I will start up new again. BTW, I have a huge credit card debt (>$5K) and this hobby is not helping.
I will be happy to accept free frags from generous reefers.

Had a good cleaning crew but they slowly died off as well. When you clean, do you usually scrub the back of the tank as well or should one leave it alone?

Since your tank crashed I would seriously just start over. Scrub your rocks clean and get new sand. You'll spend more time trying to have nature takes its course to rid the tank of the hair algae and cyano

i got a couple things you could have if youre not picky - ill give you a duncan some red shrooms a green ricordia a couple clippings of my leathers and some blue hornets possibly some fire and ice zoas- or at least like super cheap i dont wany my girl getting mad im giving stuff away -

When's the last time you've done a water change? Even people here give you corals im not even sure they'll survive

Before I answer your question Dalton. Do you see the above picture? Try to be as honest as you can, does it look like the works of an amateur or someone with experience to upkeep a tank like that?

In the above picture the tank does look very mature and well maintained except for a tad bit of algae growth. The reason i ask if you have done a water change recently is because some people (I'm guilty) get lazy or for some other reason dont do water changes and their tanks go downhill from there. Im not here to criticize, just trying to help a fellow reefer out.

Your lights fell into the tank, sorry to hear that. When you switched to PC lighting, did you not see that your tank was slowly heading down hill? Why wait until it got to that stage before taking action to find a new light? That second picture looks like a very neglected tank.

Since the loss of the LED light and the switch to PC, I had been doing water changes but to no avail. With a FT and a PT job to support the wife and baby, I really "neglected " my tank. What made me change? When I browsed this forum and looked at all the gorgeous looking tanks, I was motivated again. Someone woke up the dragon! I thought to myself...if I put away this tank, my kid would not be able to enjoy it as I have. You see, I have the know-how but not the means to spend too much at this point in time.

With that said, I just picked up a new LED light. Yes...I've been scrubbing away and stayed up till 3am installing the new light. I will keep you all updated.

To be honest and in my opinion Danny (I'm assuming your name is Danny) if what you're looking to restock is what was in your tank prior to the light mishap you didn't need to go LED. Your pc lighting is plenty for leathers, mushrooms, assorted polyps and candy cane/caulastrea.

I also think it might be easier in the long run to start over. Cook the rock and kill off the nuisances and clean the sand and get a cup or two of live sand from a reefer in your area to reseed the newly cleaned sand. If you look at it this way, it might be quicker and easier to start over fresh and go through a new cycle then it will take to get your existing under control. Plus, you can rescape the rockwork and set it up to avoid dead spots and get great flow throughout so organic don't build up and you start having problems again. Whatever you decide enjoy yourself

I also agree with this. The pc lighting should of been enough, the only issue is making sure the pc bulbs are new and constantly replaced in a timely manner. Old bulbs would cause very algae infestation along with improper maintenance.

The led dropping in the water may have also electro shocked your tank and inhabitants causing dieoff and spike in your ammonia and nitrates which I turn also causes algae infestation.

I'm glad you've been bitten by the reef bug again and good luck to your future. I've encountered a few crashes and gave up over time due. However, every time I restart the hobby , it only gets better and better.

Thanks Dalton, Mike, JAdams,Bowlopho and Dodgerblew for all of your awesome suggestions. I have a rock with ugly golden brown polyps, should I "cook" them as well? In other words, my "live rocks" are really "dead rocks" at this point? I think i need to set up another small tank while I give a new makeover.

BowloPho: The PC were bought from some guy who used to own a lfs. I guess they were USED. Yah , I know..."you get what you pay for".

Dodgerblew: You are awesome. Thanks for putting in the time in giving me some great suggestions. Yah, I get these bristle worms living in the rocks and sand bed. I hate these Pherecardia bristle worms!

Jadams sorry I didn't buy your light from you. I found a higher wattage Chinese LED (Marsaqua) light instead. Not the best but it should do for now.

I also have the marsaqua led. Great light for the price. And if you want to restart, you could save a couple pounds of rocks and keep all the livestock in a temporary setup while you tear down the tank and restart. After giving your tank a thorough cleaning, cooking your rock, and changing your sand your tank could have some awesome potential again. And if you start the cycle reusing some of the old live rock, it should take around two weeks or less before you can start adding back fish and corals
