Hey all, I wMt to start adding more corals in my tank. I have a gsp now but want to add more. Is there a corals for dummies thread anywhere.
I post this question on this section of RC because I do like softies
Thanks

I believe you are just wanting some suggestions on easy to care for beginner corals? First post your tanks specs then we can better help you out. It helps a ton to know the lighting, flow, and filtration you have running, then we can give you some suggestions on some corals to get. But just as a quick little list to have of easy corals try some of these. This is by no means a complete list there are many many more you can try as well.

MUSHROOMS-are fairly easy and dont need a ton of light. Don't get ricordia or yuma yet though.

COLT CORAL- (these go by several common names)

ZOANTHID/Palthoa- can be easy but some require pretty intense lighting.

XENIA- is the perennial favorite soft coral very easy to care for and grows like a weed.

LEATHER CORALS- Very large variety to choose from but almost all have the same tank needs

I agree with above. Mushrooms are super easy and come in some fun colors! I am now doing some zoas after a year but you should have matured a little in the hobby first. Leathers are quite resilient. Best of luck!

You can also try some kenya tree corals (similar to colt coral). They grow like a weed in most any conditions. Only thing is that you have to be careful or they will overtake your tank. Plus I don't think they look as nice as some of the other softies.

+1 kenya tree. You might also consider GSP(green star polyp), shrooms, zoas. Later on you once you get the hang of it, you can maybe do some leathers.

Wow thank you guys so much. You are so much help.
As far asy tank goes. I do have a t5 39w bulbs x4. Two white, two acitic(sp). I know I will need more flow, I only have one K nano right now. But will get 2 K1 powerheads.
One question I did have was, should I start adding an additive to prepare my future softies?

good luck with your coral - soft corals can really be beautiful and you would be surprised on how easy they are to frag. you might want to check with your local fish store on chemicals / addictives. we started off with mushrooms, toad stools and leathers which seemed easiest for us. there are such a variety of mushrooms that they can be quite beautiful a collection in itself. if you have moon lights, you may want to think about investing a little more in those that glow in the dark. we had compaqs first, then t-5s, and leds... mushrooms and leathers are great in all of them.

good luck and enjoy
=)

btw, we were more successful with zoas, frog spong, brains, duncans, etc. when we started supplements. chili corals are fun too... check out our photo album
