Belize?

I am currently looking at destinations for a honeymoon next year. I recently have become intrigued by the Central American country Belize. I was curious, has any one been to Belize and if so, thoughts? Were you able to snorkel / dive the Belize Barrier Reef?

We went to Placencia, Belize a couple of years ago. It's much smaller than Belize City, rustic and newer at the same time. We were there for 4 full days and 5 nights. You can walk almost anywhere in town. We snorkeled Laughingbird Key (Google it) about 11 miles off shore, we did a taxi/tour of the Mayan pyramids and swam in a blue hole on the ride home (5-6 hours in the car) and we did the Monkey River Jungle trip.

If you are expecting 4 and 5 star facilities you will be disappointed... this is a more rustic and just developing area. Now we did rent a big house (5 bedrooms, 2 kitchens for 8 people) that was directly on the beach and had a nice pool between the house and the beach. The house was very 5 star with wonderful facilities.

We had a great time and I'd go back in a heartbeat when the chance to do so comes along. If you have questions or want to see pics, just let me know. Also happy to go to email and keep it more private if you want.

Thank you for the info. Any photos you may have would be greatly appreciated. I am looking at this as a potential honeymoon spot for Fall 2016.

I suggest contacting Richard @ Tampa Bay Saltwater. He has an interest in the Itza Lodge and could give you some good info. This resort is only accessible via a 45 minute boat ride from mainland Belize. So the entire area is pretty much untouched by man. I'm going this winter.

Diving was pretty good (although I was on a live aboard) at least for the Caribbean. The blue hole is a waste of time but otherwise all dives were good.

May look at Ambergris caye.

North part of the island is growing, and several new hotels as well as a casino. San pedro is nice, and pick your dive outfitter of your choice. From the docks, 15 minutes you can be in the water on the reef.

Been to CA twice, both to Belize. Can't comment on the vibe compared to other CA countries, but I enjoyed it, and will go back.

Belize city is slightly depressing.

Tours, excursions to mainland are all available from Ambergris. Rhw other Caye offer less than what ambergris has to offfer, but fun to visit none the less.

i got scuba certified while staying in ambergris caye through reef adventures. I would recommend it to anyone. I will go back several times. when I dove with them they took me to the reef to dive and then when we were done we went to shark/ray alley to snorkel and it was amazing. I stayed at the mayan princess. you will have to rent a golf cart because the only way to get around is golf cart. pretty much the only cars are cabs. if you go please post pictures of your adventures!

Belize has amazing diving, I stayed- Camped on a small island about 1 to 2hr off the coast for 2 weeks. as others have stated its not all 4 or 5 stares places thank god they price most of us working folks out any way.

so in short is a great place for diving if you get off the mainland. look in to the islands that"s where the gold is...

I agree with CuzzA. We went there in Feb of this year. The diving around Ambergris Caye was good but not as good as what we encountered in Coz or the Big Island, HI. Lots's of soft corals and gorgonians. Some nice stoney corals but fish life was less than either of our other two destinations. There are tons of nurse sharks and they are very "friendly" due to all the feeding they get.

We also dove Turniffe Atoll area. The diving there was great! Agree with Snorvich. Blue Hole is not all that. Fine if you want to check it off of your bucket list but otherwise it's a 130 foot dive that lasts about 35 minutes with a bottom time of about 10 minutes.
