Benefits Vs. Troubles

I am going to start a reef tank and was thinking about a package from TBS? After researching I was not sure it was worth it. I love the idea of all the good hitchhikers and the rock looks fabulous but I am terrified of all the bad hitchhikers. I am new to this and not sure I could identify good form bad never mind catching them. Does the good out way the bad here? It does seem that the potential for good hitchhikers is definitely not as great with other sources LR but would the potential for bad hitchhikers be as great from LR from another source? :eek1:

I am so confused!?!?!?!?!?!

I didn't know the mantis was called a 'thumbbreaker' till I started reading and had I known I probably wouldn't hold the rocks with my hands. Hey, they are just as scare as I was so unless you provolt them otherwise they will stay inside the tunnels when you handle the rocks. Some are bad hitchhikers such as bad crabs eating corals or hermits but that is just part of this hobby.

Look at all the pictures that's been posted here and the rocks are beautiful and it's up to all of us to do the upkeeping. I was sketipcal in the beginning but I am glad I got my pkg from TBS. I've been to LFS and I've purchased so called LRs from FiJI that was dried when I got it. I think getting the bad critters out is the least amount of time you have to spend on the tank, I spent so much time every night fighting the nitrate problem is killing my time to sleep. I think the bigger question is how much time do I have to enjoy to keep this beautiful setup than how much time I may need to get the bad critters out. I got a total of 3 mantis in my pkg with 2 I was able to get same day the the last one it took a week. People say stone crabs do damage but I think the 3 emerald crabs I put in have done the most damage and most the reading say they are good guys but not to me since they have taen out most of the tiny feather dusters and sponges off the rocks and half the the tube corals.

Still not sure then I would suggest shop around LFS till you find something you like and buy 1/4 to 1/3 of the amount you were going to buy and see what happen. Post some pictures after you setup. ;)

I guess you are right in the grand scheme of things the time spent hunting bad critters in nominal compared to everything eles. Besides all the rock at the LFS does not look good at all. I even saw a Matis shrimp at the LFS, but at the time I did not know what it was a matis just thought it was cool. Now I know. I think I will go for TBS when I am ready.

Thanks

By the way flameangel88 where in NY are you I want to ship to Newark airport and was wondering the cost?

You can email Richard at tbs and he can give you a better ballpark figure. All this ships with water and I think it was like 16-19lbs of water to each box.

If you are getting the 60g pkg then
Live sand--60lbs + water probably 2 boxes here
Live rock--60 lbs + water " " " "

Looks like about 184lbs for the first pkg and in my case it was $77 freight charge for the 1st 100lbs.

Not bad especially for quality of rock I can't wait!!!!!! One quick Q the procedures state to test water 2X a day and change water as needed. I work in NYC live in NJ could probably test and change 1X day when I get home from work would this be a major prob. Sorry if i am driving you crazy just new excited and want to get it right.

Sometimes I get to test 2x a day sometimes not. Just remember to bring the ammonia level below 1 with appropreiate wcs. My tank cycled in about 11-12 days on the 1st pkg and I didn't see a spike on the 2nd pkg.

HTH

I am looking to order some time next week I will keep you posted on how things work out. especially chasing bad critters. Thanks again for all the help.

I got 60lbs of rock in about 2 weeks ago. I have spotted 3 snails milling around. The 3 living snails and no clicking leads me to believe that im Mantis free. I have yet to see any crabs at all so far but theres alot of hiding places. Dont know if I just got lucky with bad hitchickers but its defiently possible that you wont get many either.

I've seen a total of 5 porcelain crabs in my 46lb of rock and my neighbor claims he saw a 6th - they just keep appearing as time passes

Your chance of getting the same about of hitchhikers for other rock, good or bad, is IMO not even close, unless the other places ship their rock in water too.

There are pros and cons just like anything else I guess.

You will get crabs for sure, some good some bad. You will more than likely get at lease one mantis shrimp. You will get various plant life, some good some bad.

All the life, some like it, some it is great at first then more of a pain later on, why? When you get into getting actual corals you want to keep it is sometimes difficult to place them. To others this is never an issue.

For most people the majority of the life dies off after about 1-1/2 years or so, some things make it, a lot don't.

For a while there were folks with outbreaks of Cirolanid Isopods, there is a big thread on them, not heard much about them lately though, but just don't get fish for a couple months and this won't be a problem.

The "Package works" do it like Richard says and you'll be fine. If you have kids or a spouse you want to get interested in the tank then you can't beat it.

Me personally,
I bought the package, everything was exactly as they said it would be. I had bad crabs, got rid of all of them (I think). I had some nudi's, good crabs, I still have a mantis or pistol that I have not been able to see, only hear. I still have maybe 40% of the life on the rock that came on it. (1.5 years now). At this point, although it was great in the beginning, the novelty is gone and my interest is focused on the corals I want in the tank. I do have a goby that came as a hitchhiker, still alive and doing well. I have also been in a constant battle with some type of red plant that came on the rock, spreads like crazy and has been very difficult to control. I am still having to remove rock and chisel the roots out of the rocks when I see it growing.

If I had to do it over again knowing what I know now (not related to TBS but the hobby as a hole) would I do it again, I don't think so. Am I sorry I purchased it to begin with..... Nope.

Hope this kind of answers your questions.

Well I just added my RO/DI water to the tank and will be waiting a bout a week to ensure that the Salt and PH levels are stable. This gives me more time to think but as of now TBS is for me.....of course this can and will change several times in the next week....LOL

In case this helps... I did a local pick up of 50 lbs of TBS rock 2 weeks ago. I purchased about 7 lbs from a LFS. The rock I purchased from the LFS had a gorilla crab... nothing so far except some fantastic rock from TBS.

WOW that does help I first heard of gorilla crabs with TBS. I just assumed that because of where and how they get the rock the gorilla crabs were going to be on them. This is the first I heard of a gorilla crab on rock from LFS. Well you know what they say about assuming???? Thanks

With my TBS I got 3 mantis shrimp, 1 pistol shrimp, many gorilla, rock, porcelain, and mithrax crabs.

I caught the mantis', and rock crabs, left in the pistol shrimp, porcelain, and mithrax crabs. I've been working on getting the gorillas out, but they are really small (pencil eraser size).

The worst of all have been the rock crabs. They break open rocks, and coral heads to get at food. I was finding broken coral pieces in the sand. Truly a pain.

The bad hitchhikers are just a part of the hobby, and add to the experience.

I have truly enjoyed my TBS, and would do it again. I am still finding new stuff all the time.

For the price, it's so much better than the bare stuff the LFS wants $6 - $8 a lb. for.
