What are you using for lighting? I'm not sure what I should use if I start a 10 gallon nano.

Haha, yeah I love my shrimp. Too bad it didn't focus, but I still love the pic.

Turf- I detail my lighting thoroughly earlier in the forum, but they are 2x18 watt 50/50 and 2x20 watt 50/50's.

I agree that the 96 powerquad is a decent light to start out with.

The death of the nano

The death of the nano

I bring you sad news.

My nano is dead thanks to a heater malfunction.

My tank was at 63 degrees for multiple days, killing/almost killing most of my corals and all the inverts. Luckily, my cleaner shrimp survived, as with the other corals you can see in my main tank.

Some might ask, why not just buy a new heater? Why take it all apart? Well, I need to pay for part of my college, so I cannot afford a new heater and all new livestock. I'm not selling this system, but I'm going to pack it up and take it to college once I get my own apartment.

I hope you've all enjoyed and learned from my nano building experience. I'm really, really upset that the damn heater broke, but there is nothing I can do. I can't wait to see how easy it will be once I start this thing up again from the knowledge I've learned from you all. Thanks a lot.

Sorry to hear about the heater problems.

I have a couple of heater comments:

On larger systems, I alway keep a second heater in the tank as a backup in case one fails. Won't help if the the heater gets stuck in the ON position in which case - you'll fry everything. I've never had a heater fail on any of my tanks.

I don't recommend putting a heater in a hang-on filter or skimmer since if the water flow stops - you're effectively heating your filter and not the tank. I HAVE HAD FILTERS STOP and I don't check them evryday. I've had the pump on a hang-on fail (defective) and I had one stop (needed to be cleaned). This in fact happened on my 5.5g. Was probably down for 3 days.

Just some random heater thoughts!

bennerkla, I am sorry to hear about your heater malfunction... I am sure once you get settled in to new apartment and get started on your Nano again it will look better then ever

Thanks guys. I'm excited to see what it will look like in the future with all of my gained knowledge.

The only reason why I put the heater in the filter was because it is unsightly. Might have to in my next tank though, or at least by a top of the line heater.

Don't worry, it'll be back up in no time
