will they starve if there is no aptasia

If you don't have enough Aiptasia to sustain Berghia, then you don't have an Aiptasia problem...

Attached article should answer all questions about Berghia nudibranchs. This is where I learned all that I know:

I recommend everyone read the article by Anthony Calfo before delivery. This will really help with your success.

I plan to introduce a few of my Berghia in both sumps (along with several Aiptasia covered rocks) I will put others in a 2.5 G nursery tank with Aiptasia rock. I want to fatten the nudis and encourage them to start egg-laying before gradually placing them in the DT.

PM me by noon on Wednesday for this group buy. You may also just copy and paste your name and the number of nudibranchs you want to the list above.

Again, I strongly recommend you read the Reefkeeping article that is linked above. If you read it, I think you will be pleased with the Berghia for an Aiptasia problem.

I am so looking forward to no more Joe's Juice and Aiptasia-X!

I ordered 52 Adult Bergia Nudibranchs.

The order should be shipped FedEx (overnight) on Thursday and I should be able to pick it up Friday morning.

I am located in Edmond, just a few blocks north of Aquariums FTS store. You may pick up your Berghia Friday afternoon or Saturday (preferably before noon.)

Please PM to let me know when to expect you. If an emergency arises and you cannot take delivery Friday or Saturday, please let me know as soon as possible.
Thanks to everyone who participated in the group buy.

From their color, they look like they've been well fed...

Everybody get your acclimation procedures ready!

LL

I'm interested in the acclimation procedure. Do they provide specific details for how to best introduce these guys?

Acclimation

Acclimation

I will make copies of any instructions that come with the order. However, I recommend the article I linked above. It tells all.

They are remarkably easy to keep, but everyone recommends against introducing them into a large DT right away. Give them a small container with "seasoned" saltwater from your tank for a day or two while feeding them...they don't need a heater or aeration. She suggests acclimating slowly to the higher PH. watch for signs of stress during drip acclimation. when the PH matches they will be good to go in! She grows them in clear salad cups like you see at grocery store salad bars... Use a pipette (or small baster) to move them.

When putting them in a DT, do it after lights out, pumps off, and place them close to (but not on) a group of Aiptasia. They are nocturnal to avoid predators like certain shrimp and wrasses.

There's a lot more in Calfo's article.

Acclimation and moving tips:

Acclimation and moving tips:

Some tips from the breeder:

I prefer turkey basters. I put those in there in case you didn't have anything else. I just drip acclimate like a fish. if they start scrunching up they are stressed but i've really never had a problem with them doing it. Remind people to turn pumps off and put in preferebly when actinics are on and fish are sleeping. In case they blow off the rocks. A trick i use is empty snail shells. Put them in their temp container and they will crawl in. You can than move the snail shell to where you want them in the tank.

Man, I hope they dont become an expensive snack for the fish.

The secret seems to be introduce into the tank at night - the biggest concern as predators would be your wrasses, I think. Wrasses are generally not active at night, but the berghia are nocturnal feeders. They will hide out during the most dangerous times... Lights out, pumps off, fingers crossed.

Update

Update

I carefully placed several pairs of berghia nudibranchs in my 120G and 180G tanks last weekend. I also placed 6 in a 2.5G breeding tank, where I can closely watch the berghia gang up on aiptasia from the base. They polish off whatever I put in the breeding tank. I have two egg rings in this tank.
Warning: you have to let the berghia find the aiptasia - not the other way around. I witnessed an aiptaisa grab one of the nudis and in a hearrtbeat he was gone. I simply placed him too close to the anenome when I put him the tank...
I can only see about 5-6 surviving aiptasia in the 120G, so I know they're working in there. There are too many Aiptasia in the 180G to notice any difference yet.
I am anxious to start a colony in the breeder to send reinforcements to the 180G.

LL

I'm guessing either some of my fish found tasty snacks, or I should have added more than two in a 90g to notice a difference this early.

Both seemed to acclimate well, I added at night one via baster and one via empty snail shell.
While we don't have a real aptasia problem, You could see a few here and there- they are still there.

I've scoped around for the nudibranches at night, but have not seen them since introducing them. :(
