Best and worst of local shops....

I have to say I think Aquaworld has made vast improvements over the years, with a few more changes the store could really be sailing great. But for now, they always do have great stock and what I think are reasonable prices. The guys have always been helpful and I never had an issue with anything I bought from the store.

Seahorse used to be one of my favorites but they are too expensive and too far out of my way to visit on a regular basis. They always have healthy livestock though, with the exception of a few fish now and then. But then again, you never know what you will get in shipment wise so if something comes in, in bad shape, that isn't their fult. I just don't think you should put stock that is in bad shape, in the main displays where customers are looking.

Elmers could use some improvement. They have been around forever....FOREVER. They always seemed to carry nice fish, the corals seemed a little pricey sometimes because they were all the same price, but i haven't been back recently to know if they changed it.

I personally don't really consider pet supplies plus as a fish store....but the one near the radisson meetings is probably the best one.

You know for being land locked in pittsburgh we really don't have BAD choices for fish stores, I think they are all pretty good. Plus, everyone from PMAS seems to have a nice variety so we all seem to get a piece of what eachother has. Now...if you take a trip to Baltimore...check out exotic aquatics...now that is a real fish store run properly :) we should take another road trip :)

That Pet Supplies Plus is now "Burtons" and they quit carrying saltwater. I stopped in a month ago and the lady working said they will not be getting back into saltwater.

I agree about the fellow reefers, if it wasn't for Ray and Pat, I wouldn't have squat in my tank...:D

Did "summer break" Kelly just call for a road trip? Last time we did that I got a huge ticket. Well, not as huge as it should have been, but still.

Shouldn't you be measuring skimmate stinkyness or something?

:)

S !

A bit off-topic but Kelly - just wanted to let you know the pair of clowns you donated to our school's tank when they needed a new home are still doing great. I don't get a chance to see the tank that often, but was by it last week and they are still going strong.

oh my gosh, you can't be serious, i have been wanting to send you a PM FOREVER!!! The clowns are still doing great!?!?! THAT IS GREAT!!! I am so happy to know that!!!! You just made my day :) I will send you a PM :)

Oh Sam :) lol oooh i remember that haha and it is still a well hidden secret!!! (so shhhhh) you know you want to go on another road trip!! just don't drive so aggressively this time :p hey now i have been workin on a LOT this summer, you should check out the new article coming up....it's really interesting...might knock your socks off about skimmers...but i'm not going to leak any information...yet! :) How have ya been?!

I need to get to a PMAS meeting....

here's a thought for all.... one persons castle can be anothers cardboard box...one persons treasure another s trash....people do get what they put into something and no one person is always right.....seahorse,aquaworld,wet pets and under the sea are the same way.let the person who gets the experiences good or bad have them and we shouldn't judge just take it all in and learn....

But for someone like me, it's nice to have these type's of threads so I don't drive an hour and a half to Pittsburgh, on my way to a crappy LFS...

This thread can be very helpful for people like o0xerog0o that drive very far but also for us nearby. Some of us may have had a bad experience 3 months ago at a store and quit going but were not aware that they did a complete 180 and the store is now top notch.

In line with what zzpw3x said, If it looks like a duck, sounds like a duck, and walks like a duck......well you know.

JMO :D

I've enjoyed this thread tremendously, cept for the freak out part.

I grew up in Churchill and my first tank was bought from Elmers. It was in 1981. They gave me my start in this awesome hobby. My old neighbor owns Audio Communications and this gave me some memory lane time.

Thanks and go Stillers and Pens!!

Well I'm new to the area and the hobby. Been going to Wet Pets for anything and everything from day 1 and I'm more than happy.

Would be nice if they had some more exotic frags but other than that I have no complaints.

What is the pricing on Aquaworld's coral frags and what type of variety (plus what other store carries reasonably priced frags)

I am converting an old 72g FW to SW and shutting down my 37g SW - and would like to add more corals, and I don't mind going with frags to grow out if they are reasonably priced

well just my two cents but i've had the best luck with all fish that i bought at seahorse. When u go u need to talk to john. this guy has helped me with so many things through the years, he knows his stuff. The other one to talk to is heather as far as saltwater she knows a pretty good amount. John helped me with my discus, reef, fowlr tank, and even back when i had africans. The one post about the bad fish where everyone can see them, i was told that their rows of tanks can all run indepently and they treat certain ones as hospitals when ness.

if you are talking about the burtons in bridgeville... they do still carry salt water stuff.... it is just very limited... the one guy brandon who runs the aquatics area is trying to clean it up before he gets a whole lot of stuff in stock... they can still order stuff and are very helpful... if you talk to brandon (he used to work at wet pets)

Not Bridgeville, I was referring to the one in Monroeville. I don't think I have ever been to the Bridgeville one. I was just at the one near Ross Park Mall two weeks ago.....It took me about 2 minutes to look through the saltwater section.

did all of the local Pet Supplies Plus turn into "Burton's Pet Store"? I just saw the one on McKnight is no longer a PSP.

Aqua World has some very nice frags now, all priced between $25-60 it seems. They have a lot of nice acro and acan frags, tons actually. It's worth a good visit. I like the new shallow tanks with the frags, and you can easily see the condition/coloration of each piece. They altered one of the main saltwater reef displays into a Zeovit system, which is interesting.
