Hey guys.. I am setting up at 150 Gallon mixed reef aquarium. Medium Bioload.

I would like some help figuring out which biopellet reactor is the best for this setup:

Choices:

1. JNS Alpha 2
2. Reef Octopus BR110
3. BRS Biopellet reactor
4. AVAST Media Reactor with Biopellet Nozzle (which model? MR5?)
5. Nextreef SMR1
6. RLSS FR-4/FR-8
7. Vertex Rx-U 1.5L or 2.0L ?
8. Reef dynamics 135 Biopellet reactor (i thought it was overpriced though)

Let me know what you guys think.

Please reply if:
1. You have had any bad experiences with any of the reactors.
2. You have experience/ seen more than two reactors on this list
3. Have used any of the reactors on this list long term (3-6 months to a year)

Thank you.

In my opinion, every reactor on that list does the same thing, tumble pellets with the only control being how much flow is fed to the reactor via the feed pump. The Reef Dynamics is the one exception, it is a recirculating reactor that allows total control, of the feed rate and effluent output. If I was to do a larger new build I would probably go with the Reef Dynamics.
That being said, I use the BRS reactor and have for quite some time. It's cheap and works well plus if you decide you don't like biopellets you can use it as whatever kind of reactor you want with the purchase of the insert for it. I personally just don't see the point of paying over $40 when all the others do the same thing the BRS reactor does.

Reef Dynamics is the best one out of the bunch - total control.

I see that Royal Exclusiv just released BP reactors... They sure are pricey though.

I'm using the TLF 150 for your your size build it would be the TLF 550, cheap, and works well. I have it plumbed off my return line and and adjust the flow with a ball valve. I'm very happy with so far.

Zero experience.... Opinion is from reading

If you want the best then that usually costs more. Thus reef dynamics, like stated gives the most and best control which the others do not offer.

Also pay more for a dood in the us to make then vs paying someone in china to make it

When money is willing.... I plan on a reef dynamics bpr500

I have the RO BR110 on a 150g heavy bioload, it's been set up for most of this year. For the feed pump I'm using an Eheim compact 5000 running on its lowest setting and I'm using the Aquamaxx brand pellets. The unit's good quality for the price, and is designed purely for pellets but I've used it for other media to and no probs -and it's also never clogged. My only minor complaint is it's a bit of a PITA when topping up the pellets but I only have to do that every couple of months. Atm i'm considering another BR11O running off the same pump to use for Rowaphos.

Meh might as well delete this before I get yelled at. Anyways, there are some lesser known brands out there that are really good. Just do a google search!

I'm using the RO Biochurn-120 and if you have the sump space for it then I would highly recommend it. Keeps nutrients in check on my 120 overstocked system.

Yeah.. i was thinking of the avast qith the nozzle.. heard good things.. anyone willing to chime in?

I have the mr5 with the nozzle,I would not recomend because when you have add more pellets the center tube isn't in a fixed position like others with the bottom plate is glurd in.I have to lay the reactor on it's side and spoon in pellets, then slide the tube and top on reactor together.
