I tend to use my 24-70. Every landscape shot is different but as a general rule I would suggest the wider the better. Thats said I use my 70-200 for landscape work, and (rarely) a 100-400.

My ideal lens suggestion for what I imagine you have in mind? Canon 10-22.

When I was still using a crop body camera, my kit consisted of a Tokina 12-24, Canon 24-70 and a 70-200.

I don't agree with the 28-200 suggestion. It's a consumer grade lens and will never give great results. It's also not nearly wide enough on the low end.

It really depends on what you shoot. Sometimes I shoot "landscape" with a 100-400. The Tokina is way cheaper than the 10-22 and is a great lens. I can't recommend it enough.

don't really understand what you mean, but i have some sample shots i can post. really only problem with the lens is you cant get the shots of something far away. i use the big one, gotta find out which one specifically, (but i haven't taken out of the case for two years) for those.
its does beautiful panoramic:

really quite a versatile lens. could you tell more on what you mean about a crop body camera?

The 40D has a sensor size that is smaller than a 35mm frame of film. Nearly all DSLRs do as well. The only exceptions are the the Canon 1DsMII & MIII, Canon 5D and the new Nikon D3

That means that you get the effect of additional magnification because of the smaller image circle. That magnification is 1.6x the focal length on his camera. Your 1D is a 1.3x crop.

That means that on your camera the 16-35 really behaves like a 21-45mm lens on a 35mm. On his 40D, it acts like a 26-56. The 12-24 that I reference behaves like an 18mm lens on that camera, which is quite a bit wider than your 16-35. Don't get me wrong, it's a great lens, just not what he's asking for.

On a side note, neither of those images is even remotely sharp. If you're trying to use them as a selling point for that glass you may have missed the mark. ;)

The Canon 24-105 f4L IS lens is awesome. I have been very impressed with it's sharpness on my 5D and even a 1Ds MK3! With the Crop factor mentioned above (on the 40D) it should be a good all-around lens for you (unless you shooting more wildlife than landscape, or like a really wide field of view). I also really like the performance of the 70-200f4L lens too. Good glass isn't cheap though. Another option as mentioned is get a dedicated wide angle zoom (16-35 or something), a 50mm fixed (canon has a super sharp one and it's only like 70$, and round it out with a 70-200.

When you "the best" lens.....is that money issues aside and regarding sharpness, or just a regarding a great all around lens?

oh hell no, i couldn't sell a lens for my life with pictures.

Seriously though, I'd look at the Tokina 12-24 and either the 24-70 or the 24-105

"Landscape" is what I do. ;) If money is tight, I still recommend those lenses. Just start looking at used vs new. B&H, Adorama and KEH are great resources for used glass. They have the advantage of having return policies; something you might not get in a private party sale.

B&H and KEH get a second nod from me too. Originally from NY I was shocked when I meet a guy shooting in the Canadian Rockies who as soon as I said I was from NY he said "oh you must shop at B&H?". This place is nationaly known and for good reason.

Don't know much about the 12-24mm but if you're on a cropped sensor size and like wide angle it'd probably be nice to have.
Incidently I have a non IS version of the 70-200f4L if you interested (since I up graded). It's a very sharp lens.

the canon 24-105 L is a very good all round lens. It's 2 downsides are price and some distortion - but very nice. I use it constantly for many different applications

I dont think the 24-105 is wide enough on a 40D to be his only lens for lanscape, it would be good with a wide angle lens like beerguy said (that new tokina 11-16 looks awesome!) but I used to own the 24-105 and wasnt very impressed so ended up returning it (to B&H).

Jeff.

On a side note, IPT, B&H is not just known within america, when I was over in NYC earlier this year it was one of the key places I had to visit. :D

What about this new lense I have been reading about

canon 55-250 IS about 299.00

so far the review have been great... if you are on a budget

I agree with Doug and Jeff. With my 30D the FOV is disppointing with the 28-105. You need a nice wide angle. Works great on my 5d though.

Mike
