I dont think the 24-105 is wide enough on a 40D to be his only lens for lanscape, it would be good with a wide angle lens like beerguy said (that new tokina 11-16 looks awesome!) but I used to own the 24-105 and wasnt very impressed so ended up returning it (to B&H).
Quite right, I keep forgetting about the half frame crop factor
