In your opinion what is the best 2 Canon Lens for Macro shots of fish and corals?

1. Quality - ????

2. Quality/Price - ????

Thanks.

100mm f2.8 macro would is (and was) my first choice. You get 1:1 magnification and it's internal focusing so the length of the lens doesn't change whilst focusing.

What he said :p Second would probably be the 50 macro because it's great for bigger fish and the price/quality factor is really hard to beat since it is so incredibly sharp. Slow autofocus though.

1. 180mm f3.5 macro
2. 100mm f2.8 macro

The 180mm is the "Big gun" and it wins as the most versatile macro lens. It has good working distance, but is a bit expensive, and quite a bit bulkier and heavier than its little brother the 100. For value, the 100 can't be beat really.

How much does the 100 lens run? I am planning to get a Rebel XT pretty soon and I want to pick up a good macro lens. Any links to see what type of pics it can take?

*picks jaw up from floor* WOW, now I want it even more :) Those pictures were amazing. I just read a quick article saying the Tamron 90mm F/2.8 was pretty comparable. Does anyone on here use that?

I had one a long time ago- it was superbly sharp but it didn't focus internally (the lens barrel extends outward as you focus closer-- extending to almost double it's normal length) and the autofocus was slower than slow. Very solidly built though.

Good to know. I'm sure I'm going to have a ton of questions once I get the camera. But I don't mean to hijack the thread asking about the macro lens :)

Will it pair up good with the XT?
Why not? The XT uses the EF system of lenses, and the 100 macro has the same EF mount.

The question is, does it pair up good for what you want to shoot. If you want to shoot macro, then "hell yeah!" :)

gregr would happen to know what camera those pics were taken with? They are some of the best pics I have seen. Also what filters if any. I have the Canon 20d and am planning on getting the 100mm f2.8 macro. I was just wondering if I need any extra filters and is the lens good for more than just macros?

The 100mm macro is awesome for normal shooting too, portraits especially. It isn't as well suited to subject matter that requires fast auto focus since the AF on all macro lens are slow on purpose (small motor increments).

Macro lens are stunning performers when it comes to optical performance. They have to be, since the smallest defect will appear at high magnification.

Thanks Newhere :)
Most of the pics were taken with my trusty old 1DMII and some with my 10D. Your 20D is capable of comparable image quality because it has a very similar sensor- with the Digic technology. I rarely use filters- mainly just on landscapes- a polarizer is about it. I would love to have good grad nd filters but all that I've tried gave a color cast to the pics... still looking for a good one.

Here is a portrait from the 100mm Macro - sharp sharp sharp!!!

And an actual macro with it as well.

This ought to give you a good laugh... these are the lenses I own:
17-40L, 20, 24 tilt-shift, 24-105L, 50 macro, 80-200L, 100 macro, 300f4L and 100-400L. Thinking real hard about a super wide prime or even fisheye.

I want to add a fisheye and a wide and also was looking at the 2x extender. Do you use an external flash with the 100macro?

It should be illegal to have reef keeping and photography as hobbies at the same time. What started out as a new Canon G5 to take better tank pictures snowballed into this over the last year:

Canon Rebel XT with grip
Tokina 12-24
Canon 28-135 IS USM
Canon 70-200 4L
Canon 100 2.8 Macro
Canon MR-14EX, C 420EX
Tamron 200-500 f5.6/6.3
Tamron 1.4x TC
Kenko extension tube set

+ 1 Gitzo tripod, 1 Manfrotto tripod, 1 Manfrotto monopod, 2 ball heads, a pan head and a Kata bag to carry it when I travel.

:D
