The 100mm macro is awesome for normal shooting too, portraits especially. It isn't as well suited to subject matter that requires fast auto focus since the AF on all macro lens are slow on purpose (small motor increments).
Macro lens are stunning performers when it comes to optical performance. They have to be, since the smallest defect will appear at high magnification.
