LOL I started out getting a better camera for trips. Then the reef pictures didn't look as good so now I have to upgrade my reef tank. I am thinking about getting the canon a620 with underwater case for snorkeling.

Don't forget the car! I just bought a set of lightweight rims for mine.
I just made the jump to dSLR, and picked up
Rebel XT
18-55 kit lens
50mm 1.8
100mm 2.8 Macro
70-200 f4L
The 100mm is a no brainer for in-tank shots. Fast and VERY sharp and 1:1 macro at ~6" from the end of the lens. It also makes a good general purpose lens. And I can't say enough good things about the 70-200.
I almost hate to mention it, but Canon's most recent rebate period just ended July 15. The XT body was $100 off, the 100mm was $40 off. From what I've heard they do rebates twice a year, and it's a good opportunity to save a few bucks. I'm putting off any new lens purchases until the next one.
the rebate is one of the reasons that I picked the fisheye, 70-200, and MT-24EX ($135 rebate total). Their xmas rebate is usually better so don't feel like you missed out too much.
Originally posted by louist The 100mm macro is awesome for normal shooting too, portraits especially. It isn't as well suited to subject matter that requires fast auto focus since the AF on all macro lens are slow on purpose (small motor increments).
Macro lens are stunning performers when it comes to optical performance. They have to be, since the smallest defect will appear at high magnification.
the thing is that i used to shoot a lot, but have been out of it for too long, so im a bit out of touch with some of the newer stuff...
i have all nikon and contax equipment and dont want a canon body just for this lens (i have never liked canon bodies, personally-- dont jump on me for this ;P its just personal preference and what youre used to!!! im not saying theyre bad)...
however seeing some of your pix (excellent by the way) has made me remember the joy i got outta shooting macro and also the frustration i always had of "if i could only get a little more magnification..." (i use a 105mm Micro-Nikkor up to 1:1) this canon lens seems to have an answer to that without the hassle of bellows, reversing etc...
so im thinking of taking photograpy up again but wanted to know if you know of an adaptor for this canon lens (to a nikon F mount)??
Scott,
I don't think there's a canon-to-Nikon converted, but there is a nikon-to-canon converter. Well, not for the EF series of Canon lenses anyway. The reason is because canon EF lens uses a digital interface to control the aperture actuaction (amongst other things), while Nikon is "manual" in a sense.
In addition, the main issue with converters is that regardless of how thin they make it, the converter always act as a tiny extension tube. While this will not be an issue with the MP-E65 since it can't focus to infininty anyway, it will be a problem with other lenses.
For your Nikon system, I guess you will just have to use the reversed lens technique for a time being. Or you can try shooting with cine lens, but those typically give 8-10x.
could you explain to me the cine lens thing... i dont know about this, but that mag sounds very interesting... that is if the focal distance is far enough...
