My wife and I are all about colors and character.

We have a 30g two month old tank and we want to get a sand sifter.

I plan on putting sps, anemones, and some other corals in the tank.

Since we are new to the hobby I would like to see some of the different Sand Sifter Gobies that would be most interesting.

PLEASE POST PICTURES!

Thanks so much,

It is extremely unlikely any sandsifting fish will get enough to eat in a tank that size. Even in a tank 4 or 5 times that size, feeding can be a problem. They almost always starve and that's not something you want to watch happen in your living room. Try nassarius snails. Good luck.

My favorite fish is my yellow watchman goby, he sifts sand from time to time, but nothing to keep the tank clean. Here he is protecting his rock.

That is a good point. Some fish that sift do not use it as their exclusive means of feeding and are more of a possibility depending on the species and the individual fish. You could almost surely keep a yellow watchman depending on other inhabitants. I've never heard of them being difficult.

This isnt mine but I have a yellow headed goby that I picked up when he was barely an inch

He has learned to feed on flakes and pellets and steals from my tangs and angel on a regular basis

He's almost two inches long now and fat and happy. He's an absolute joy to watch and keeps my sand spotless

I guess you need to be lucky to get one that learns to eat

I love the look of the sleeper gold head goby but I read that they make a MESS. Grabbing sand from the floor and taking it to the top of the tank and letting it fly. Unless its a REALLY large tank that can handle it, you will likely end up with a cloudy tank more often then not.

^^^ That.

I've had 2 Diamond Watchman gobies over the years and now have a 6-spot sleeper goby (which unfortunately for your needs is only white with blue dots on its face so not colorful). None of them have starved to death. They all ate/eat fish food. The 6-spot stays on the bottom with his sand sifting, and at feeding time comes right up to the baster and bites it if I don't squirt the food out fast enough LOL.
