Best external pump for a 75

I have been using a couple of Little Giant pumps for a few years on my system. One pushes water with about 16ft of head and the other only has about 8ft. They have been great pumps and relatively cheap. When compared to other pumps I have heard, they don't seem any louder.

A lot of it depends on how fast you are looking to turn your tank's volume over. I have about 650gph on a 92g corner and about 1200gph on my pair of 75g tanks (~600 each). Most people get into the thinking that you want the water screaming through as fast as possible in this hobby but water movement is not necessarily associated with the return pump. I like Tunze powerheads and have been using the nano 6025 series with a couple of mods to get around 1200gph each.
The Maxi-Jets with mods on them really move some water but are not as quiet and reliable in my experience. If you are trying to keep powerheads out of the display then you should probably look into a closed-loop system instead.

One of the problems with a fast turnover rate is that the water flows through your sump/fuge so fast that it doesn't have time to be cleaned of nirates and proteins. It will all eventually be caught by your filtration but it may take a few trips around the circuit first.

I tend to try for the most electrically efficient pump I can find to avoid sucking up 300+ watts of power 24 hrs a day 365 days per year. If you only save 100w on your pump choice it would add up to a savings of $87.60 if you pay 10 cents per KilloWatt/Hour.

That adds up over the years and could easily purchase a replacement pump or some nice frags ;)
