Best filter for use in Hawaii?

If I'm going to Hawaii, this kit comes with me:

Lee Holder & adapter
Lee Big Stopper (10 stops)
A few GND's
of course a tripod!

With such a beautiful setting like Hawaii, I think I would cry if I didn't bring this kit!

The funny thing is that I'll be co-leading a workshop there next fall and I've never been there. :D

I'm sooooo looking forward to going, I like Alaska but about this time of year I want to go get warmed up somewhere, then I'm good again for the rest of the winter.

That's funny. I love Alaska and the cold really never bothers me. Well, this year for the first time I went to Hawaii. It was beautiful and all, but I found it made it winter seem worse to me. For me it made the transition harder and a little more shocking. I'm sure I'll go again because of the significant other, but for sure it made things more abrupt and killed the smooth transition. I prefer being like the frog that's in the water as it gradually changes rather then being thrust into a new extreme.

Why do you need the 10 stop filter? Just for taking slow shutter speed shots mid day? Like of the water? I was thinking about getting a 4 stop filter for doing cool silky wave/rock shots.

Hawaii's sweet. I've been there more than anywhere else in my life. For quite a while Alaska/Hawaii had a partnership that made flying very cheap, I could get 4 round trip tickets for about $1000, so I went quite a bit. I really enjoy Maui although I think if I was going to do be doing landscape photography mostly, I'd go to Kauai. Simply awesome. This is my first year going where I feel like I know anything about photography at all, but I'm inexperienced at shooting in a tropical environment, so we will see how my images turn out...

I have the same feeling, when I get back from Hawaii I dont like Alaska much for a couple weeks, but I get over it quickly and then am OK for the rest of the winter. My wife, on the other hand, doesnt like Alaska much during the winter but going to Hawaii for a couple weeks makes her able to stand the rest of the cold winter. I always say that she is solar powered :) She needs charged up to be able to function good for the rest of the winter.

Hey so where are your Hawaii pictures?

Hmm, hidden :). I'll dig some up. I wasn't all that impressed with what I got. Several factors influenced that. First I've never been, so there was a lot of not knowing where to be and when. Heck, there was a lot of not knowing where I was period :). Second, I read so much about the thievery rates down there that I was paranoid about taking gear. I didn't take my pro body, or that many lenses. Lastly, I was also taking a course so that ate up a lot of time, plus it was in Wakikki - not the most photogenic of places. I think I only took my "real" camera gear out once or twice. I used my P&S most of the time. After the course, Island hopping, and driving all over we were pretty beat so I wasn't usually where I needed to be for good light.

So it goes. It was a little harried down there for me, but now I know what to expect. Don't shoot me, but I love the mountainous and Pacific NW landscapes more. They inspire me more. Maybe because I grew up near the water so it's not that special. I'll take a tree clad sea stack off the Washington Coast with the fog rolling in anyday over clear blue tropical water with a plain clear blue sky. That being said, I saw some really nice images in galleries down there. Just didn't know where to be or when. I did okay, but photographically was just unispired with what I captured.

I hear ya. I'm a little worried about thievery as well. I brought my 50D two years ago though and had no problems, but what I did was never leave it in my car, only in my condo. Anywhere I went, if I had the camera with me that day, it came in with me around my neck. If I knew I'd be spending only a little time somewhere I wanted to photograph and most of the day somewhere I didnt, then I left my camera in the condo, safe and sound (or so I hoped) and never had any problems.

My renter's insurance actually covers the theft of my camera, even while in Hawaii, which seemed odd but my wife specifically called up and asked and they said yes, even if we left our car wide open, set the camera on the seat and it was taken, they would replace it. So hopefully I dont have to test that out, but it's comforting to know.

All of my gear is insured as well. One time, in Yosemite, I actually walked away from my car with my 7D/100-400 sitting on top of it. I came back 40 minutes later and it was still there.......

Man, you're lucky a black bear didn't take it! I hear they'll take about anything down there !!

Those are very nice, IPT.

I really wish I had a good wide angle lens, I sold my 10-22 when I got my 5D mark II and now I dont have a wide angle... I'm not missing it around Alaska but in Hawaii I think I will.

why not rent one? I used to go to hawaii annually for about 10 years or so and there are some awesome landscapes/waterfalls/vista to see (Kauaii has some awesome flooded fields, nepali coast, wiamea canyon, ect). I know I'd surely regret not bringing a wide angle.

Know of any good places to rent a lens in Hawaii? Or do you mean just do it online?

My problem is the lenses I'd like are about $30 a day and I'll be there for three weeks, so I'll end up paying about $650-700, at that point it's half the lenses original cost.

That's not bad, but the 10-22 doesnt fit my full frame camera. I sold that lens when I bought my 5D :)

I'm looking at their other prices now, those seem pretty reasonable. I've had a 24-70 in my shopping cart on Amazon for about 3 hours now but just havent been willing to click the Buy Now button. I can rent the same lens for about $165, that's not bad at all.

I wish I had a CPL that fit it, though. I guess I could buy one of those, it will cost me more than the lens rental, hah.

Of course, that 77mm CPL will fit my 100-400 which would be great.

Well cool, I just rented a 24-70 which saves me from buying it. I just dont really have the need for it here in Alaska right now, but it will be great in Hawaii.

I'm buying a 77mm B+W CPL off Amazon, I got the Kaesemann because I dont want the slim which seems to be the only other option. This CPL will work with the 24-70 I rented and then also for the rest of the time I own the 100-400, woohoo.

Thanks for refering me to that site, I was thinking lens rental was a lot more expensive, but it basically is costing me right around $200 for the whole deal which isnt bad at all. Much better than spending $1300 for a lens I dont really need!

You moved too fast! I have a coupon code "funweek" that get's you a free week from borrowlenses.com . Enjoy your trip! I just got back but unfortunately didn't have much time to take pictures.. :( Crammed a week vacation into 4 days, but it was beautiful. Can't wait to see pics!

Are you going to Maui????
If so try and stop by the Maui Aquarium it's beautiful!
I've been there, twice :) This time I'll have my camera with me so hopefully I'll get a couple good pictures.

I'll use that code some other time, if it's still available. I wish I could just edit my current order but it's too late. Oh well :) Thanks for the offer.

I've been to Hawaii a lot. Once I went for only 6 days and man, that was way too short. The most recent time I went was 10 days and my wife and I still felt like it wasnt quite enough time, we werent ready to leave yet. This time is 18 days, that should be plenty of time to just relax, enjoy ourselves and still get the things done that we would like to do.

I'd like to do the road to Hana, I havent ever done that and I hear it's gorgeous, tons of photo opportunities, but I've got an 8 month old that is OK in her car seat but wont want to sit in it all day long. The trip down to where my parents live 4 hours away is about as much as she can handle without starting to really hate it, 12-16 hours is asking too much ;) So I'm not sure if we will do that, but if so, I'm sure I'll be able to photograph some neat things there.

did the Road to Hana. L O N G day for sure. The hard part I felt, aside from the fact your doing it with 75% of the rest of the people visiting there, was timing the light. It's just a long ways to go so invariably you get a lot of crappy mid day light. Some nice lush stuff there though....it was the one day at times I was wishing for some overcast to tone things down. It was pretty, but don't know if I will do it again next time we go. Just my opinion of course :).
