I purchased a 2 fishies phosban reactor and want to use it to remove nitrates and to help my overall water quality. What media do you guys reccomend I research for this?

Thanks.

i run phosban denitrate and carbon, but regular water changes do much much much more for water quality, just my 2 cents.

Thanks Chuggy. I need to work on more regular water changes anyway... but I feel I also need to enhance my filtration due to my lack of it... Because of the setup I have I am not able to drill and add on a sump system and have yet to find a protein skimmer that will fit on my system ( I have a fully attached canopy and 2+ inch euro bracing around the entire unit. I converted 1 of 2 internal overflow boxes to "refuge", but I still need more natural and chemical filtration.

I should have never bought a tank based on its beauty!!!

Its a DAS Aquarium and I can not find any info out. So drilling is a risk considering the tank/stand are rare so I cant just replace 1 peice of it if it breaks... Darn Dutch craftsmanship lol

Unfortunately, there really is no ideal way to remove nitrates chemically. Although, refugiums can help export nitrates and Phosphates, the best way to lower nitrates is to prevent them from being made by removing waste, uneaten food, etc. before it is broken down by nitrifying bacteria. A skimmer is usually the most efficient means to do this. However, in the interim, running carbon will also help.

Sulfur denitrifiers can also be used to break down nitrate to nitrogen. However, they also come with a set of risks if not used properly.

I like Pura Phoslock for Po4 removal. Dosing kalk is said to help bind Po4 as well. Having a good feeding routine and regular water change schedule is the best way to keep No3 down. You can also consider doing bacteria driven system (Zeo, Prodibio, Bright Well) or dose a carbon source (Vodka) but much research is needed for those methods. I think that using Zeo or Prodibio are better options than using a denitrifier... sulfur is usually a temporary thing to get an out of control problem under control but Zeo and Prodibio are long term systems.
