Best Goby Choice?

What would be the best Goby choice for a 28 Gallon Nano Tank? My choices are

1. Twin Spot Goby or Signal Goby?

2. Diamond Goby?

3. Sleeper Gold Head Goby?

4. Yellow Watchman Goby?

5. Clown Goby?

All help would be appreciated. Thank you

I have both the Yellow Watchman and a Green Clown Goby in my 28, and the Yellow Watchman is by far my preference. Very interesting fish to watch, particularly if you get a Pistol Shrimp to go with them, which I would highly recommend.

Oh, and Diamond Goby would be a little large for a nano tank.

Just an fyi. Signal or two-spot gobies have a very poor survival rate in captivity.

My favorite goby is my Rainford's. They can be a little tough to feed but mine eats like a champ. Beautiful colors, great swimming style, cool fish.

Sounds like this combination is the way to go. What is the reason for this combo?

They will "pair up" together. The Pistol Shrimp (mine is a Tiger Pistol) will dig a cave, and the Goby will "guard" the cave. My Pistol is contantly moving sand, they relocate the cave on a regular basis, not sure why.

That's the one....There are several varieties of Pistol Shrimp, but I agree that Tiger is the best, and I think they get the largest. I have had a Candy Cane Pistol before, but he wasn't out nearly as much as the Tiger I have.

Agreed. The tiger is much more active than the Randall's shrimp. My tiger stays mainly under one rock in my 30g (currently no fishy friend) but tunnels under both of my large base rocks at night. It's amazing how much sand that little guy can move!

i used to have a orange diamond goby with my yellow watchman in a 25 gallon and they got along great and the orange spot did well, but he was small and wouldve eventually outgrown the tank if he didnt jusp out of a small crack in my canopy.

now i have a two spot signal goby and my yellow watchman and the YWG kind of picks on the two spot when he is around but they avoid each other most of the time. i had two die before i found one that would eat any prepared foods.

My watchman/ shrimp combo is very interesting, but dissappointing that they dont come outside of the burrow much, no activity. they sit in the entrance and watch whats going on while the shrimp only shows up a few times a day. though i do see the shrimp go on ventures and the YWG has to come the rescue and lead him back home.

I've had multiple twin spot, diamond and sleeper gobies. From my experience, all 3 of these seemed to be very difficult to keep healthy over a long period of time in a small tank. They need very mature sand beds to sift. Although I've had couple that took to prepared foods, they did not take it readily from day one. Also with a diamond and sleeper goby, they grow quite large and require larger tanks. In addition, you need a very tight lid on the tank. I've a couple jump through even egg crate.

If your rock work is not secure the tiger will burrow under it and bring it all crashing down IMO. That being said the symbiotic relationship between pistol shrimp and goby has to be one of the most interesting and rewarding to observe. I absolutely love my pistol shrimp goby pairs. I have two and am working on a third. One thing to consider is if you want more than one pair in the future the YWG will most likely prove to aggressive. There are other smaller less aggressive shrimp gobys which will live together peacefully exp. Hi fin shrimp goby banded prawn goby and my favorite the yasha goby these fish are a little harder to come by but well worth seeking out in my opinion.

I believe I will be going with your suggestions. I will get a Yellow Watchman Goby along with a Tiger Pistol Shrimp. Thank you for the help.

Forgot to mention, do I need to worry about the Watchman as far as feeding? Or will he take to frozen brine shrimp?

Mine was never a picky eater. It ate pretty much anything I offered. Flake, pellets, thawed mysis, cyclop-eeze.

Good luck with yours - you'll really enjoy them!

Will the yellow watchman sift through the sand as well? If I were to just get the watchman will I see him in the tank or will he be in hiding?
