Best Hang On Skimmer?

I have a 75 gal reef tank which I was going to sell, but decided I'm probably going to keep. I want to replace the skimmer because it's old and losing it's effectiveness (can't keep up I guess). I don't have a sump and don't want one - (not enough space). I am thinking about a new hang on skimmer but have not done much research lately. I'm hoping those out there who have purchased Hang On type skimmers can tell me why they like/don't like the one they have. I want to get one that is capable of skimming 150 gal or more and don't have space for 2 skimmers, I just want one. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have good luck and completely satisfied with the coralife super skimmers, and the prices are usually lower than other brands that have a pump with them. They work and work fine.. I would think their 25 would be sufficieint or their larger model would be more than sufficient.

yes you can get an overflow box.
cpk bak pak, aqua C remora both seem to work well

LOL, You're right, I should have mentioned budget. In your opinion, is the Deltec MCE600 worth twice the price of say the Aqua C Remora PRO?
(Remora PRO is the one I'm considering right now)

I've owned the remora pro w/ mag 3 w/ skimmer box upgrade--- one of the better skimmers, BUT not worth all the hype. Too loud for me and no different than my SS 125. If you want to spend $460 then Deltec is the best hang on. personally, i'd rather take my $400 and save up for a new DLP TV. i'd go SS 220 then if you want.... hook up an aquazone deluxe to it as well

Wow, Heres a review of that Deltek skimmer. Looks like a winner but im noy gonna buck up for one anytime soon. 446 bucks buys a lot of other things. I have owned 3 Remora AquaC skimmers and love them after I upgraded to a larger than stock pump. My next one will be a Coral Life super skimmer. Just because Ive heard so much about them and they are inexpensive and in this hobby thats a rare thing.

Thanks for the heads up on the Deltec. One question, could the Deltec MCE600 overskim my tank? I like the fact that it works so well without the skimmer box, but am a little concerned because I have 7 anemones and it's my understanding that they prefer their water a little "dirty". I'm not an expert, but I do know that over the years my skimmer has not kept up with the load (lots of extra maintenance and a 25-30% water change every week), yet I started with one rose anemone, and one green bubbletip, they both split and grew well in my tank, now I have 2 roses, and 5 green bubbletips just from those 2 in the beginning.

they say no such thing as overskimming ---just keep up on water changes.

sounds like things are going well anyway for you-- so do what you like

Deltec MCE600

I am considering upgrading to a Deltec myself... after reading everything on RC about how quiet it is. I hate the noisy Mag 5 pump that I'm using on my AquaC Remora Pro, but it does work efficiently. I'm just glad my tank isn't in my bedroom or couldn't sleep. But when guest stay over, they always mention how noisy my reef tank is... and it 's coming from the protein skimmer.

Sounds like Deltec is quiet. I'm actually considering trying to get a group order together for a discount.

I have a Aqua C Remora Pro with a Mag drive 3 on a 110 and it works very well. I doubt that an Aqua C could compare to a Deltec, but you have to take the price of the two skimmers into consideration. A Deltec hang-on runs around $400, unless I am confused. My Aqua C Remora cost me $200 with the mag 3 and the overflow box. That is a huge price difference.

Does anybody know what it is about the Deltec that makes it so expensive? Is it the brand of pump, method of manufacture, the materials, the fact that it's an import..?? Also, are there any parts that eventually have to be replace due to wear? I ask because the skimmers themselves are hard to get, I would imagine parts may be also?
Also, for HappyReefer2, Have you done any research into group ordering and what type of price you could get? Would you be ordering directly from the manufacturer?

Another good HOB that often gets overlooked is the Aquamedic TF1000 multi paired up with an oceanrunner pump. Solid performer in the $200 range.

My deltec hang on

My deltec hang on

I had used the remora pro and coralife super skimmer 65 and a bunch of worthless other skimmers that are either been retired to the closet or sold, nothing I have used compares to this deltec hangon skimmer. It smokes all the old skimmers I have used. The amount of air that is sucked in producing such tiny bubbles is amazing. Whats even nicer is that there is no big ugly pump hanging in the tank. Is it worth the $446? Hell yeah it is!! Of all the money I wasted on those worthless skimmers I could have bought this skimmer first and saved aload of money on other reef goodies. The foam this thing produces reminds me of a latte machine. Im sure others who have deltec hangon's will chime in.

Here it is in action

The pump deltec uses is a aquabee 2000 modified pump. Its not an off the shelf pump, its been modified. Deltec does not share how they did modify it but I can tell by the performance of the skimmer they did something to make the pump produce. Whats even nicer is that the pump only sucked up 18 watts an hour which is nice in energy savings. The skimmers as far as I know are built in germany and imported. Deltec has been making skimmers for decades. Deltec and H&S are the creators of the needle wheel. I know they are expensive but they are well worth it. Go check out the deltec forum in RC doug can help you out with questions about the mce600 hangon. He convinved me and boy am I glad I made the right decision.
